"Still it is a fact that some men have a strong affinity for certain lands and periods of history, which, of course, may be explained by the circumstance that their direct ancestors dwelt in those lands and at those periods. Thus I love the Norse people of the saga and pre-saga times. But then I have good reason to believe that my forefathers were Danes."

That could explain why I enjoy tales of the Norse. Perhaps it's because the blood of a Norseman runs in my veins, deep into the very marrow of my bones. When I read the work of Poul Anderson or Giles Kristian I can smell the salt wind off the northern seas, hear the chant of the rowers as they bend the oars, or feel the thrum of the steel blade as it cleaves my enemies. It's the Northern Thing, and it's a part of my long lost heritage. Or maybe it's just some damn good writing!

H Bedford Jones was called King of the Pulps. One of the most prolific writers ever. That title was also shared with Walter Baumhofer, who earned it for his illustrations.
HBD once wrote a short story of 25,000 words in one day, a fact that his stenographer flatly refused to believe.

Cool list. I'm not familiar with the Raven series, but it sounds interesting.

Cool list. I'm not familiar with the Raven series, but it sounds interesting. As Scott points out, the Raven series, along with the prequel Sigurd trilogy, is some of the best Viking fiction to be published in recent years. I've read all six of the books and highly recommended them to anyone who enjoys awesome historical swashbuckling adventures. Plenty of swordplay and carnage to be found here, along with good research and excellent storytelling.

Started listening to The Longships yesterday. Bengtsson is on HRH's level, indeed. Very impressed by the opening chapters.
