I have not heard of this one. I have his Celtic novels and The Green Man; great stuff! I was always under the impression that his Viking work was geared for young readers. Can you elaborate on this book a little Duece?

Can you elaborate on this book a little Duece? I'd have to dig it out. I was reminded of it looking for something else online. I simply remember the usual Howardian tone and lots of blood. I do recall that it was told in a fairly simple, straightforward style, much like the original saga. I have no idea if it was intended for the YA/juvenile market. As JMR once said, Treece was about the most unlikely children's author ever. Everything Treece ever wrote was dark and bloody.

I read an online review from Kirkus that states that the tale features plenty of lopped limbs and heads. Back in the day books for younger readers, especially adventure fiction, was not much different than adult fiction. A little less violence, no sex or romance. The books I could order from Scholastic services when I was in grade school would not be allowed by hyper-sensitive school boards today! Kids are getting ripped off in today's YA market.

I’m about 30 pages deep into this book so far, and it’s a pretty good read. Starts off with Harald as a little boy, and describes Norse life in a realistic and interesting manner. The writing style is first-person and works well in this case. I have high hopes for this one. I also have the YA trilogy by Henry Treece, The Viking Saga, to try as well. Plenty of Viking adventure at my reading chair this winter!

I've been hitting Assassin's Creed: Valhalla pretty hard as of late (that's where I've been) and really enjoying it. I'm not a big Assassin's Creed guy, I don't know much about the lore, haven't played any of the other games, but this is a kick ass Viking game. You can play it pretty much anyway you want, me I'm more hack and slash than stealth, so I'm going that route. The story is set during the invasion of the Five Kingdoms of what will one day be England, the same period as Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Series/Last Kingdom Series, and the latter seasons of Vikings. It's pretty enjoyable, I don't play a lot of video games, but I made exceptions when dream projects like this come out. This is the viking game I always wanted. You can even raid monasteries with your crew.

Just want to highlight a great article written by thedarkman over at DMR Books blog: Vikings! Thanks Von K! I had fun looking through some of my Viking fiction to write the article. I’d like to re-read King of the Wood and write an in depth review of it. We’ll see…

Just want to highlight a great article written by thedarkman over at DMR Books blog: Vikings! Thanks for the link Von K, great stuff by TheDarkman. I remember watching an episode of the Turkish docudrama 'Legends of War' about the Battle of Stamford Bridge with the lone fierce Viking Warrior fighting the English army on the bridge. The episode is around 50 minutes long with English subs, the production values are also pretty good for a Turkish documentary. The video should start with around the 24 minute mark just before the Viking warrior makes his last stand. The Battle of Stamford Bridge | Legends of War

Somehow I got distracted and failed to reply to this when you first posted it. Enjoyed watching this vid, surely one of the greatest one man last stands that history has to offer.
