You beat me to it! Actually, Machen (supposedly) quoted Solinus regarding the presence of small, hissing troglodytes (cave dwellers) in Libya in his Novel of the Black Seal. That was one of REH's favorite tales and an inspiration for the Worms of the Earth. Of course, Libya is where Stygia once was. Howard strongly hinted that serpent-folk survived there until, at least, the arrival of the proto-Stygians/Naacals.

Hehe. There are still people who seriously believe in lizard men living in the ground and get their living By being "lizard man specialists". Don't pass this knowledge to them. They'll go wild!

This reminded me of something I'd forgotten… … from my friend, Joe Parzanese's "Weird California" website. Tunnels dug in the heart of Los Angeles - to find an underground city of lizard people - "information" from Hopi elders - in 1934! I wonder if the man behind this ever read any of Bob's stories?? www.weirdca.com/location.php?location=38Ka nama kaa lajerama, indeed.

I wonder if Clark Ashton Smith heard about it? He actually wrote more tales mentioning the Serpies than REH. I bet he would've had a chuckle or a shudder about it, if so. I don't know where those tunnels would fit into the REH/Dark Trinity pseudohistory. They would be located in the Pictish Isles during the Thurian Age. No way would the Picts allow a Serpie city. Maybe they were buried ruins by that time. Of course, you have the subterranean Serpies of HPL's The Mound. Perhaps that was an offshoot city before a cataclysm created the Pictish Isles.
