HELP & Advice for Fan-Writers This help topic is for all kinds of help & advice for our community of Writers. General advice, and answers to questions, will all be gathered in here. ==== > My general advice = You should name & describe your main characters so readers can engage with them, and root for them. When creating a new tale, do not worry about any details like place names, geographic locations, ruling king [ or dynasty ] types of weapons, or armour types, etc... [ you can leave 'bare empty' references in your text like: country 1 = hot + desert. big city 1 = capital, towers + hanging gardens. King's palace = king [ name + describe him later? ] queen [ describe? > Later...you can EDIT fill in names + more details into your bare tale. ] >> Just concentrate on your CORE story /plot and main characters. When the 'bones' core of your tale look good to you then post it in this fan area. And ASK readers to suggest place names, + other Howardian lore, etc... [ eg. Our Deuce is usually keen to help with his vast knowledge ] > Then you can easily edit any changes into your posted tale, later? [ or repost the entire altered tale as a new [or complete] version? ] This fan area forum is the best & easiest place to practice & learn more about fan writing in the wide world of Conan. Have fun creating your exciting new adventure tales. ==== ==== LINK ==== If you want to do some basic research about place names & such this link to the great Xoth-Conan reference site is a huge help... Great idea for a thread Bux! I recall Steven King mentioning the same thing about filling in specific details later, too. His example was, if he's writing a first draft and he needs the name of a specific city, he doesn't stop and break the flow of writing to go off and fact check for the right one, he carries on writing using a temporary placeholder name, then goes back later once the draft is done. When he's revising and editing the draft, that's when he does secondary research and fact checks those details which he may have glossed over in the first draft. It kind of plays into the general principle I've seen mentioned by a lot of writers, of dividing the writing in to two distinct phases: creation and critique. Or - wearing the writer's hat for creation, and switching over to the editor's hat for critique. The only exception might be those few key details that might be intrinsic to the core concept.

I don't think you can make yourself a good writer, a pretty good one, maybe. I think its a bit like music, most of it comes natural. But if I do give advice I guess I could come up with a couple of tips. 1 Read a lot, everything and anything you can find...read the classics to improve your language, that will put you way ahead of most. 2 Constantly look for stories, movies, etc that stimulate your imagination...imagination is more important than anything else. 3 Take a comic book you really like and create a prose version of the story. In other words, work off a synopsis already in existence...Plotting is very difficult and next to imagination might be the toughest road you have to travel down. this is good practice 4 Don't bother writing anything unless you are somewhat excited about the project...makes a lot of difference...that's why I write Howard pastiche, heck its just fun!

that's sounds very cool indeed, at the moment though I am buried deep in the works of Washington Irving...a terrific fantasy writer in his own right and a wonderful writer by any standards.

I would like to give my own tip to people who read fan fiction on HOW TO READ AND RECEIVE FAN-FICTION. Remember that It's fan-fiction! Fan-fiction doesn't NEED to be "good". It's a way for people to let out what's in their heads and hearts, freely, willingly, and without boundaries or expections. We do it for free, and for FUN! No one is paying for anyone here for their fan-fiction, so no one can expect publish-ready material either! If someone starts thinking "is this good enough?" before daring to post their stories, drawings or ideas, we are on the wrong track. ALL of fan-fiction should be welcomed with a cheer! Also, everyone has their own lives to consider first, before pleasing a forum audience. Keep it easy, keep it casual, keep it fun! Help eachother and enjoy, and if you don't enjoy it - that's fine! You don't have to like everything you see! Most importantly: Don't judge! Remember, that our favourite author wrote his stories from a mental house. Embrace the strange, the mad, the different, the faulty, the lame, the annoying, the imperfect and the unreasonable! In every one of u there lives a little Howard.

Do you suppose a pirate galley would be able to travel up the Black River or Thunder River in the same manner as the Tigress was able to transverse the Zarkheba?

Somehow, although I can't verify it offhand, I have an impression that the Black River has a lot of rapids and portages. That might be especially true for a river with a name like "Thunder River".

Here is the scenario for my tale, unfleshed. Brothers growing up on the frontier during Conans reign. The elder destined to the toil of a life as an apprentice black smith under his father's tutelage, the younger learning the wood craft of the forrest runners and woodsmen. The elder builds a shotty, but sound raft and disappears down the river.
Years later where the tale truely begins, the elder returns. He is now a pirate captain. He regales his brother and his family with tales of adventure on the high seas (after an elaborate back story concerning his becoming a pirate). There is a mystery to his return, but I don't want to give to much away yet. His brother has now been elevated to comander of the forest runners(an institution founded by King Conan), and there will be contention between the two. He has a fine Aquilonian wife and beautiful children. I wanted the elder to cruise his ship and crew right up to the frontier country, but only if it's feasible.
