Now up to 60.5 million - looks like it's going to surpass that 70 million after all! I can see it getting to 80 million, and over. Movie just released in England and has yet to be released in Mexico. If you'd have said that a week ago I'd have been doubtful but now it looks almost a certainty.
Currently on 64.25 million!

I'm rooting for this to go to 100 million. They set up a direct sequel to this with the protagonist's love interest. I hope they revisit the same family 20 years down the road and Godzilla re-surfaces.

At this point it's rather doubtful that it won't reach 80 million! There is something that is bugging me though, Shin Godzilla made about 78 million in Japan alone! Doesn't seem like Minus One isn't going to bring in that type of crowd in its homeland. I have a hunch that Shin's domestic success and popularity had everything to do with Anno directing and writing, and not really because Godzilla per se. I recall hearing on multiple occasions that Godzilla does not actually have a big fanbase in Japan.

Takashi Yamazaki has stated he would be interest in making a sequel, and it even sounds like he already has general idea of what he would want to do with it. It will be interesting to see what comes of that strobing Godzilla shaped scar on her neck. Speculations?

80 mil looks in the bag and 100 mil is a very real possibility at this point.
They'd be mad not to do a sequel and capitalize on the momentum built by this movie, esp if they can keep the budget low enough.

Just shy of 71 million right now. Historically box office sales pick up during the holidays, it's going be very interesting to see how much it makes over the next week. Bigger isn't always better, although I'd imagine that for a sequel Toho will cough up a couple mill more. Toho spent 20 million back in 2004 on Godzilla Final Wars, the most expensive Godzilla movie to date and one of my favorites. I know Toho wants to launch a new series, they'd be dumb to pass this opportunity up, especially with the director enthusiastic about returning for it.

Minus One is getting a theatrical re-release in black and white. And its not some lazy filter conversion. They are going frame by frame to give the film a look as if it were shot on monochrome or nitrate film stock. Which not only looks cool, but the original Gojira was shot on monochrome and nitrate film stock.

I can't see a general audience having that much interest in the b/w version at the theater after having seen the original in color but the core Godzilla fans ought to love it. I've read stories of fans going to see Minus One up to 5-7 times in some cases.

I did end up taking the boys to see it and they loved it, as did I. My buddy said it was the best Godzilla movie he ever saw and I concur.

I don't believe I have actually out right heard anyone disliking the film. And I wholeheartedly agree with you and your friend, and I've seen every single Godzilla movie.

Crazy that it took 70 years for a great Godzilla movie to be made. I thought it would never happen at this point. I don't even think the original Gojira is a good movie, I get canned responses about why it's a great film; but whenever I re-watch it, it comes off as such a flawed film. Recently found out that back in 1954 upon release domestically it received a mixed response from critics.

Sometimes when you create a new template, it may still have issues that need to be worked through. I think the pacing of the 1956 Raymond Burr version is paced better, combining all of Godzilla’s attacks at the end.
