It is a fascinating essay, I highly recommend everyone to read it.
Until now I have not heard about Sax Rohmer’s short story Tchériapin, which seems to have influenced two REH stories.
Also, this essay helps in the dating of the previously elusive Casonetto's Last Song.
I find it highly probable that Casonetto became an opera singer, because the name “Tchériapin” is reminiscent of Feodor Chaliapin, the famous Russian bass, whose roles included Mephistopheles in Gounod’s Faust. He sang at the Met in the 1920s with immense success for eight seasons, so REH has probably heard about him.
