The golden horde rode deep into the lands of their enemies. Their grim faces and hardened stares spoke to their determination. They would not be defeated. They were 150,000 strong and their weapons were new and their armor well polished. Their chariots were fast and easy to maneuver, their horses the finest in all the lands. They reached the plain and paused with the dust whirling about them. Opposing them were not more than thirty thousand dirt caked stalwarts. These were the Sahali, fierce and warlike but armed mostly with swords and spears handed down for generations. Many carried only wooden clubs with jagged bits of metal nailed on here and there. There were even a few women among them, half naked and covered with grime. They are were a brave people, the last of their kind. The Golden Horde had come at last to wipe them forever from the face of the earth.
The Sahali King stood foremost among is warriors. He wore burnished bronze armor, one of the few that possessed more than a wooden shield. He was a tall handsome man, surrounded by his twelve sons. Most notable among his sons was Karum-Nasin, a warrior feared by many and revered for his warrior skills. He carried a long broadsword and a shield inlaid with silver designs that depicted his gods. Beside him was his wife, the warrior Sonya. Her long red hair sparkled in the sun and her polished shirt of mail gleamed. Her dark eye's were fierce and darting, here was a woman fit to fight beside any man.
Suddenly several hundred mounted soldiers thundered from an eastward direction. They were Trohali tribesmen come to join their cousins. They were led by Prince Ado, a proud and talented warlord. "Just in time," Karum-Nasin grunted with a grim smile on his handsome face.
Ado nodded, quickly turning to survey the Horde. His horse snorted, its hide covered with foam. "I suppose this is as good a day to die as any other my cousin." Ado bowed to Sonya and dismounted to embrace his kinsmen. "I fear my infantry will not reach the battlefield in time. I have nearly twenty thousand additional troops but they are still half a days march away."
"They will offer us submission. Naturally their terms will be wholly unacceptable unless one wishes to be a slave or castrated on the spot but it is possible we can delay by pretending to mull over their offer." These words Karum-Nasin muttered half to himself. His father King Tatannah nodded his approval.
As predicted the Horde sent envoys. Three splendidly adored lackeys rode forth in their slave driven chariots. Their terms were simple, surrender or death. The women and children would be spared and taken as slaves to their great cities. The men could join the horde as soldiers or be executed. All properties and belongings would belong to the Horde. King Tatannah appeared on the verge of accepting the harsh terms. However, he said, "I must gather my people and tell them of their fate, it is the least a King can do if he can no longer protect them. I will give my answer at dawn...and I hope that I and my house will be spared?" The envoys smiled, and especially fat one said, "we will spare you, we are a merciful people. However, all royal males shall be made eunuchs to prevent the line from rising again some day. This is to be expected."
King Tatannah nodded and the envoys rode away, confident with the prospect of a bloodless conquest. That night the Trohali infantry arrived quietly in the camp of the Sahali. They brought extra weapons and other equipment. Other fighters also straggled into camp, some alone, some with their kinsmen. The Sahali forces has swelled to 55,000 fighting men in all and they had some calvary, and even a few chariots. It was still a pitiful force in face of the opposition but the oppressed tribesmen were at least confident that they could take a sizeable number of the Horde with them to the dark underworld. At dawn the cocky envoys returned. "Your answer?" They demanded. Instantly they were seized and their penises severed. Their chariots were seized and the diplomats were sent back to their masters in a crude wagon drawn by a ancient donkey. The Sahali warriors cheered them on their journey and many threw feces upon the hapless trio who had been stripped of all their finery and jewels. The generals of the horde sat stone faced, displaying no emotion. However their knuckles whitened as they gripped the hilts of the gilded swords savagely.
Within minutes the battle was joined. It lasted until the sun went down but the Sahali force remained intact although they had lost nearly half their number. Many fought on with wounds, some leaning on a boulder or dead horse and wielding their weapon with one hand. Karum-Nasin slew and slew and slew. His ferocity and skill were incredible. Always by his side was Sonya wielding a curved sword in each strong hand. At last all of his brothers and sons were dead or wounded but he fought on. When darkness fell he rested and drank wine. There was not much speech that passed between him, the King, and Prince Ado. In the morning they were all quite certain that death would come. Still, all were satisfied that the Horde had paid dearly and would pay yet again with the coming of new day. Word was sent that the women and children were to flee into the hills, to survive as they could without men. Many of the women joined the men that night, they would fight beside them to the death. They carried butcher knives, pick axes, and garden tools. The rest of the women and the children had scattered, safe at least for a little while.
The next morning the battle was joined anew. In the eyes of the Horde soldiers one could see fear but they dared not disobey-. Within hours it was over. Prince Ado fell early, his proud body riddled with arrows and spear wounds. He had fought well and brought honor to his name and the house of his father. Karum-Nasin was one of the last to fall, wounded a dozen times and covered with blood and gore he collapsed at last atop a pile of dead Horde warriors. Sonya lay at his side, her hand upon his shoulder. Thus the conquest was complete. But the Horde was to bloodied to rejoice overmuch if at all. Their general lay badly wounded, an arrow had found a weakness in his armor. He groaned and writhed in pain as a fever spread, a fever that soon took him. Many thousands of his men lay dead or to mangled to move. A few weeks later the cities of the Horde came under attack from another great army. Their forces depleted, the cities fell one by one and their women and children were enslaved. Their men were blinded or castrated. The Sahali children, still free and hiding in the hills came out and re populated their towns and cities. In time they became a great people anew and the children of the Horde soon vanished entirely along with their name...a name that is not remembered even now and thus is unspoken. In their great cities only lizards and cockroaches dwell.
