Absolutely he had great taste. I've made mention before of the BAF series Carter captained - an excellent series that will introduce one to certain names one should know who is going to read/discuss fantasy. I haven't read a whole-whole lot of his stuff, though - the first few Green Stars (the first one of these is really good, kind of a James Allison/ERB story), a few of his 'one-offs' like Tower at the Edge of Time, The City Outside the World, etc. His Smith collections are where I really developed a love and appreciation for CAS. I can hardly believe it now, but I pulled a BAF edition of Poseidonis w/ the Gallardo cover out of the Book Exchange in Princeton, a town not far from where I grew up. That's like walking out in your backyard and finding an asteroid with a black diamond in the middle. Pretty darn rare occurrence. Alas - it was that same copy, along with many other titles, that went up in flames.

I agree. Imho, he (Lin) needed more time to develop as a writer, time to absorb and move away from his influences and find his own voice. But as a critic, editor, scholar and fan enthusuast he was one of the most influential in the field.

I got the pb of Planets and Dimensions a few years ago. That wasn't too expensive.

No, haven't seen this one, but would love to have it. I need to take stock of what all I do have. Might be interesting if members posted a 'Show us your Smiths' pic of their collections.

An excellent audio rendition of one of Smith's "Volmar" tales:

During WWII, Rah Hoffman and Francis T. Laney made the pilgrimage to Auburn, CA to visit Clark. Laney was one of the movers and shakers of early REH fandom, in addition to being a CAS admirer. I proudly own a book from the collection of the late Mr. Hoffman; a man who shook the hand of Clark Ashton Smith. Here's Laney's excellent account of their trip: www.eldritchdark.com/articles/biographies/52/the-%27weird-willys%27As one finds almost every time from such accounts, Clark was a very cool ol' boy. One of a kind who lived life on his own terms.

Truth, like a coin, has an obverse and a reverse side. One is a platitude, the other a paradox.
One cannot tell a woman's age by the frequency with which she looks in the mirror.
The true immoralist never tries to defend even his virtues.
The wrath of the witch-burners is in direct proportion to the comeliness of the witch.
There is no tyranny so oppressive as the tyranny of mobs.
Women who dress well are true artists: one might call them exterior decorators.
Lovers rush in where husbands fear to tread.
~ Clark Ashton Smith ~

A decent look at Smith's tale, Ubbo-Sathla: blog-sototh.blogspot.com/2014/02/the-hazards-of-curiosity-shops.htmlOne thing I have a problem with, is the blogger's implication that CAS used hashish. I've never seen any evidence of this and have, in fact, seen statements from Clark to the contrary. CAS was a well-known and self-admitted bohemian and bon vivant. I just don't see him denying using hashish to his dying day if he had actually partaken of it. Perhaps to Lovecraft, but not to more "hip" fans like Donald Sidney-Fryer. It wouldn't affect my opinion of Smith one way or the other if he had, but I just don't see why we should contradict his testimony and that of his friends with no evidence. I have little patience for posthumous "makeovers" of any persuasion. Ubbo-Sathla
