I use an ten-ish year old Compaq laptop. It was running horrible for awhile til I got the IT guy at work to fix it up. I use Microsoft works word processor that came with it.
I don't get to write everyday, but I jot down ideas in a notebook and annoy my friends with e-mail outlining story ideas. This helps me keep track of stuff to use later.
I have yet to try and submit anything for publication. I need to build a backlog of completely original material first. I also tend to post my stuff on a blog, I dunno if that makes stories less likely to get published elsewhere or not.

always remember to decapitate someone in the first chapter and have the blood spray all over the place. I have never sold any stories or even bothered to submit any but my writing has been banned in 46 countries so I am doing OK Why? I think you write interesting stuff... my mom used to go online and say nice things about my writing...of course I paid her to do it but she also said I was her smartest son...just because I was her only son doesnt change the sentiment

I understand you, Thief... My mother read my work from time to time. And, though she likes my poems a lot, she thinks (likes in certain way) that my writing is to violent and toooooo dark. She praise my describing ability and style, but thinks that I should add something joyfull in it. What can I say... Her fav is Tolkien's LotR, and I dont write fabled fairy tales (though Tolkien had few darker stuff in his work), so... Just do your thing and relax. Everyone is unique in something

Over the last couple of years I've been using an Alphasmart Neo 2 for much of my writing. It's more or less just a word processor, but you can connect it via USB to upload what you've written into whatever document you like. No frills, a normal sized keyboard with a small screen that reveals maybe only four lines at a time. The best part...runs on 3 AA batteries and lasts FOREVER and you can turn it off/on as much as you want without worrying about losing any info. It's useless in editing but perfect to just keep you going so it works well as a first draft tool. I upload mine into Scrivener.
Apparently they made a bunch of these for schools just before laptops became cheap enough. Since then a bunch of schools have offloaded them and you can find them on ebay and other places, used. They don't make them new anymore and there's not a ton of support for them. But I purchased mine for about $20 a couple years ago, and picked up three more last fall for my kids at around the same price. I haven't checked the prices lately but I assume you could find one for that much. Make sure you get the connector cable (though, they're not hard to find).
It's a great tool...I just need to carve out more time to write!

Emails are a good quick way to take notes or jot down ideas. Hell, just email drafts work pretty well that way. Quicker than having to go to Documents or whatever and you can title them with the subject matter. Then you can copy & paste whatever you want to save at a later date and delete the draft.

I used to do the email bit, now I just use Google docs. I cut'n'paste into Scrivener for polishing.
