I was looking thru some early issues of Marvel's mid-90s fan mag and I came across some interesting Conan info. There are solicitations for cancelled issues of "Conan" and "Conan the Savage", as well as an article about upcoming (in 1996) Conan stories. Here are the solicits: Conan #11 - In this special all-inebriated issue, Conan gets plowed on mead, bumps into some armor-clad vixens, trips over a sickly midget, and fights one heck of a hangover! Pull up a barstool for "Crom, Am I Drunk." by Larry Hama and Pino Rinaldo.Obviously this one is a mis-solicit of the actual issue which is a continuation of the previous issue. Conan #12 - By Crom, Conan's going to kick some serious booty in this issue! by various.I think they didn't know what was going to go into this one - probably because it was going to be cancelled. Conan the Savage #11 - Concluding John Buscema's final Conan story! Plus Pat Mills whips up a time travel tale in which Conan must avenge not only the murder of a fair maiden - but his own!The Buscema part is wrong, since that story was all in #10. Here is the cover for that issue: Conan the Savage #12 - Brutes, babes and battle-axes- What Cimmerian could ask for anything more? - by variousHere is the cover: The article about upcoming project is four pages long - if I can get a good scan, I'll try to post it. The high points of what was coming up include the return of Red Sonja, Conan vs a Hyborian Age version of Venom, Conan vs a Hyborian Punisher, Conan fighting Thor (again), and a Simon Bisley drawn version of "Rogues in the House" called "I, Thak" as told from the perspective of the ape. What an odd time for Conan that was.

Wow, Marvel really didn't know what to do with him towards the end I guess.

Hello and welcome boboldman. Very interesting stuff, this issue of Alter 139 included the return of Roy Thomas to Conan in the 1990's. Also included is how Roy Thomas was to adapt the Round-Robin tale 'The Challenge from Beyond' by REH, H.P Lovecraft, C.L Moore, A. Merrit and Frank Belknap Long in the SSOC. The adaptation was to be a Conanised version of the tale. There's some great information in this issue. Here's a link to the preview. twomorrows.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1232

There's a number of Alter Ego mags covering Roy's time on the REH characters , well worth tracking down.

In a semi-related question... why would Marvel cancel the long-running "Savage Sword" and replace it with "Conan the Savage"? Not that the latter was bad... it was just less pages for the same price as the former. I guess I just answered my own question.

Don't forget since the 1990's both Marvel and DC have continuously renumbered their main titles, so, it was kinda to be expected. The thing is even after three decades mainstream comics are still following the same tired, unimaginative formula, with mediocre art and a less than average narrative.

You have to remember back then 1995 in the middle of the comic boom then collapse. As Hun said, a number #1 probably looked a whole lot better than Conan the Barbarian #293 and Savage Sword #247. Did it pay off in the long run? No, it collapsed in the short run, but part of it was getting pulled under by the whole market falling in on itself.

Mediocre art and less than average narrative: if DH Conan dies tomorrow it will be no surprise. The main series has been a real, real shame for many years now. I haven't bought a trade featuring the main series since Iron Shadows in the Moon. That means since then there has been no Conan I want to keep for the ages in my collection. None of them, without any exception. The only thing I have been collecting in the past five years is King Conan. I also bought The Colossal Conan and that is it.

Yeah, it has been a disastrous last 4 years or so for the Main Conan book. But, I think Conan the Slayer is a vast improvement, despite a few minor problems I have with the art it is still a good comic. Hopefully, we also have Roy Thomas and Tom Grindberg on Conan, and if the art of Grindberg is anything to go by were in for some quality Conan comics very soon. link to Tom Grindberg thread swordsofreh.proboards.com/thread/271/grindberg-great-artist-pulp-tradition

I seem to recall some truly hideous '90s-style comic art and not much substance.

I gave up on the Dark Horse Conan mid way thru "Queen of the Black Coast". Man, that was disappointing. Larry, I have been filling the gaps of my Marvel collection.
It's funny... around '95, Marvel just stopped getting what made Conan work. Dark Horse seemed to lose its way with "Queen". It looks like they are trying to fix it with the current series but, for me at least, it's too little too late.

It's funny... I was just re-reading that one. It's so weird they made him look like a super hero for two issues.
What really bothers me about that whole series is that they completely abandoned all the continuity and history of the past 25 years. It really seems like they were going for a soft reboot (before people knew what that was) approach. In fact, the final issue of "Adventurer" announces it as the start of a "new Conan mythology".

GAH!
Conan's wearing one of those superhero face-thingies that isn't a mask or helmet. Is there a name for those? Has anyone outside of comic books ever worn such a thing?
