As several of you know, The Pit of the Serpent was the very first Costigan tale I ever read and one of the first REH yarns I ever read, period. Our own Jason Aiken gives a run-down of it here:

Thanks for the link Deuce. I have found Jason's video on youtube, I'll be watching the episode directly after I finish this post. I have not really read any of the Boxing stories yet Between Cromcast and this great forum over the years I have picked up a little bit. I'm still waiting for the right collection, I'm more likely to find the Nebraska/Bison edition eventually in the UK. I still hunt down my books the old fashioned way from bookshops and dealers online located within a reasonable distance from London. I have only read the ' The Turkish Menace', only because the fighter reminded me a little of Koca Yusuf (he was known as the Terrible Turk in Europe and the US). I have provided a wiki link below, there's very little about this fighter/wrestler in the English language. Koca Yusuf (1857 – July 4, 1898) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusuf_İsmail

HPL commenting on Sailor Steve in "Alleys of Peril"... "Steve [Costigan] is a likeable chap, for all his simian resemblance and the reader ends up with three cheers for his indomitable spirit!"
-- H. P. Lovecraft to Robert E. Howard, 30 Jan 1931

You should also keep an eye out for the two Zebra collections along with the Ace reprint omnibus that combined them. Another good one is Waterfront Fists and Others from Wildside: howardworks.com/waterfrontfists.html

Jus picked up the Adventures of Dennis Dorgan and Iron Man paperbacks published by Zebra. Already read The Alleys of Singapore and half way through The Jade Monkey. By Crom and Tengri this stuff is great - I've been holding out for the Bison collection or even less likely the 4 volume set by the REH foundation for years. I finally givin to temptation and picked up the paperbacks and can tell that I'm gonna love this stuff, even more than REH's historical fiction! And that's saying sumfin.
I just hope I don't have too much fermented mare's milk and lose this paperback that I carry around in my sky rocket (kumiz is outa season by the way, so I'm more likely drinkin' a cheap n' cheerful amount of whiskey).

Discovering the humorous boxing and western stories was also a revelation for me. Nowadays I prefer reading Steve Costigan and Breckinridge Elkins to Conan and REH's historical fiction. Try to get the REH Foundation books where the Dennis Dorgan stories were restored back to their original Steve Costigan versions. As far as I know, the REH Foundation will reissue those books in less expensive paperback editions.

I really love the language used in these yarns. On the rare occasion it takes a little while before I work out what's been said I've not read that much but I like the carefree nature of the yarns, it kinda reminds me of the Conan stories in that respect. I'll read the Zebra editions and I'll eventually hunt down the 4 volume set by the REH Foundation. Interesting that they restored the Dennis Dorgan stories back to the original Steve Costigan version - I did not know that. Thanks Elegos7

All the other stories were originally conceived and written as Steve Costigan yarns.
