The Footfalls Within was the first Solomon Kane tale I ever read. It is also the last SK yarn REH ever completed. It remains one of my favorites. Perhaps that is because REH, as he told Lovecraft, consciously intended to move it into more of a "cosmic horror" direction than some previous tales. Slaughtering slavers is always a bonus. A good review here from neo-pulpster, Keith West: adventuresfantastic.com/blogging-solomon-kane-the-footfalls-within/

this is the first Howard tale I ever read, although I had read some of the Conan pastiche stuff and the comics...I was very impressed of course. Maybe not one of Howard's very best, but darn good to say the least

HPL on The Footfalls Within...
"Howard's recent W.T. story has a fine ending, though as a whole it might be better-proportioned. He is so anxious to work in rough & tumble fighting that the balance of his work sometimes suffers."
-- H. P. Lovecraft to Clark Ashton Smith, August 1931
