I watched this again the other day ... not an awesome movie, but it has a decent Kane feel to it. I have more positive feelings than negative ones for this film. :-D

This is a pretty good swashbuckler, and a lot of fun to watch. It does lack the dark, grim, haunted feeling I get from Howard's original material, and I could have done without the crucifixion scene and the overblown CGI finale.

It was a worthwhile effort IMO not exactly the way I envisioned Kane but not without merits

While not very far down the path of what we would like to see in a REH based film it IS a step in the right direction.

Very good explanation of why the film was torpedoed distribution-wise. Sad, becasue the movie would have been a much bigger hit if he was handled right from the beginning. It is still on my annual re-watch list though ... which reminds that I should look for a Blue-Ray version to update my collection.

Appalling confession. I have not watched Solomon Kane the Film. I have heard, consistently, that Purefoy is great as the Puritan avenger. I will watch it, and I won't judge until I have. But. I have one gripe, sight unseen, a misgiving I just can't shake.
"Solomon Kane", to judge by the reviews, gives a back story for Kane that uses that accursed cliché of the protagonist seeking to atone for vile deeds in his past. They always do that! They did it in "Van Helsing", with the character Hugh Jackman played (as like Solomon Kane as two peas in a pod) suffering amnesia and a mission to hunt monsters as his penance for awful sins. They did it with "The Shadow", with Lamont Cranston assigned to fight evil using his telepathic and hypnotic powers (plus two automatic pistols) as the price of redemption for his atrocities as a warlord in the Far East.
I didn't like that in "Van Helsing" OR "The Shadow", and I doubt I'm going to like it in "Solomon Kane". Probably I am just going to have to settle for Purefoy being terrific.

If you have the Encore channels on your cable dial, you may get the chance this month. I believe it made its pay-cable premiere yesterday on one of the Encore channels (maybe Suspense?) Plug it into search and hit the DVR.
FYI-your supposition of what your reactions will be is most likely correct.

I watched this film for the first time last night on Netflix. I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously the film detoured from Howard's stories, but Purefoy as Kane was spot on. Beyond that I thought the character development (while not given many favors due to the extremely wooden, though not un-enjoyable, plot) was great and I attribute that more to Purefoy as an actor more than anything else.
Maybe because I went into it expecting crap, I came away thinking it was a pretty darn good movie. It was fun. I enjoyed the way it was filmed. The scenery, the action, the acting. And in the wake of the Conan TV series announcement, it made me think how great a Solomon Kane show would be.

Im glad Howard's characters are still in the mainstream film wise. I still dont get why they cant just adapt Howard's stories instead of going off in whatever direction some writer feels will help his career. Howard could outwrite any of these people but nobody can accept that blatant truth

I watched this movie two nights ago for the third time since it was released. I think this movie gets better each time I watch it. James Purefoy fills the role of Solomon Kane admirably.
If there can be any negatives, I felt that the landscape of the film was a bit too gloomy for 16th century England, as it felt more Hyborian. Perhaps I would like to see Kane in a more bustling community, that is the normal world for its' time (whatever that means), whereas Kane comes across a pocket of evil, rather than large swaths of land reduced to ruin, that would certainly have attracted the attention of the English rulers of that time. Such a pity that this was an another 'Origin revenge' story, with the glimmer of hope that we may see further movies that could expand Solomon's adventures, but unfortunately never materialised.
I think that Pete Postlethwaite's character in the film as William Crowthorn, was the anchor to Solomon's hope of redemption for his past ways of evil. Some may argue and say that Solomon's relationship with William's son and daughter was of a stronger bond, but I feel that William's trust in Solomon, full well realising the depravity of Solomon's past and yet still totally accepting Solomon into his family, was perhaps a way Solomon could hope to redeem his past, until it was shattered and everything went to hell. It certainly wasn't to his father or brother that he needed to redeem himself.
I am judging this movie for what it is, and perhaps Solomom the rigid puritan as we know from the written tales, is not the Solomon in the film, but I still really enjoyed this even more on the third watch and would have loved to have seen a sequel.

Interesting thing is with barely any marketing push, this film made 2/3 as much as the 2011 Conan film overseas (can't compare US domestic because I think SK was in the theaters for what, 3 days a few years after it came out?) Had they waited a few years, it could have been done as a streaming series or film. Little did they know.

It was mentioned at Howard Days last year that there was still plans for SK BUT with what's happened with Conan it's hard to see now sadly.
