If I was wealthy I'd never do anything but poke around in ruined cities all over the world - and probably get snake-bit.
From a letter to H. P. Lovecraft (1931) rehsongcycle.com/chapter13 "Denizens of the Netherworld" I added a link "Howard and classicism" to prev CH. Any classical ruin is a revival in a state of picturesque decay. In the atmosphere you have your revival, in the ragged line of a mosaic
There's something on this in CH 9 at end, "unthinking" expression.

rehsongcycle.com/chapter14Part 2 of 3 (this might be for those who think civilization is going down with the fishes, as per "aspects of society")

rehsongcycle.com/chapter16Change of title since I dig the negativity of "Aspects of Society". I'm pursuing Howard's poetic gifts and seeing how far you can relate to romantic epics of Byron and Spencer (Faerie Queene). Part 1 of 3

This is just from CH 17. The civilization that divests symbolism and the unconscious may underneath be apelike. The "clever ape" is the really bad dude.

"Council for Action" artist Elena is on a 2-week break in her home country of Russia and prints will be on sale from her website at that date (apparently). There are 2 more - "DNA Dragon" based on BWS "Red Nails" and "Clown of Blood" based on Noto "Red Lace" - illustrating further chapters. I know fans are coy with the tenuous connection to Howard, but it is there as I see it. There are artist/romantic "types" - REH, Lovecraft, BWS, Wally Wood*, Jeffrey Jones - who can appear almost paranoiac or delirious (Druillet from Metal Hurlant). I'm reading a book on Dali who used the phrase "paranoiac-criticism" for the surreal process of associating disparate things.
This could seem like symbolism if we lived in a world of perfect symmetry and perfect timing (all things connected). The point is, in the modern world that could appear like madness (unreality) but in ancient times delirium could be "normal".
"DNA Dragon" In the modern world DNA is "fact", but it's an imperfect molecule. The perfection of birth is essentially fertility - female, water, moon, pure timing and symmetry (horology or "pseudo-science"). It's a delirious, messy event. So, therefore, the ultimate "non-fact" in the modern world is birth, which is actually reality (romance). We live in a sterile (infertile) world. We have sex-by-proxy (technique). That is the ego-monster, beast-of-misrule.
*(Woody's influences are Caniff, Raymond, Crane - a lot going on together)

1 "Enchanted Forest"
2 "DNA Dragon" (in production)
3 "Clown of Blood" (in production)
The illos by artist Elena Priestley are "inspired by" Howard themes, content, characters.
Weird 4 has a new intro as a got a memo from Deuce (see Weird 9). As it says in the intro, the unconscious is "the home of Dionysus and Apollo"; the psychology of instinct and of seers, visions. In other words, everything except reason and feeling.
The word for this is ontology - on being (Zappa was into this, hence the connection) - so I'm taking a classical approach to Howard. "Weird Apocalypse" is not "about" Howard but I think it will be of interest to quite a few fans.
Howard's antithesis to civilization may owe a lot to this emptying of the unconscious. Posts here will be on Howard's connection to "Weird Apocalypse"
