That's a good scenario Hun. I prefer the notion of Conan learning archery from the Hyrkanian tribesmen rather than the Turanians.
Lordyam, I get the general vibe from REH that Conan's dislike of the Hyperborean's is more deep seated than a single event can cause. REH's comment from the Miller letter seems to suggest that his hate was already building during his time among the Aesir, and that his time spent in captivity only consolidated that. A few commenters have also suggested that his familiarity with the signs of the rack mentioned in tTotE most likely occcured during this period of captivity.

Just for reference, here are a few of the quotes Deuce mentioned where REH mentions Hyrkanians in the yarns. Hun already posted the one from The HYborian Age essay above.
There are more but the general point is that, more often than not, when REH refers to Hyrkanians in the yarns it does seem he generally is refering to the Hyrkanians of Turan.

Thanks for the quotes, Von K The Hyrkanian/Turanian thing reminds me of how the Europeans and Persians consistently described the Turco-Mongol tribes as Tartars. The Mongols despised the Tatars and massacred the majority of the Tatar tribe scattering the survivors among other Turco-Mongol tribes - yet, somehow the name persisted among the descendants of the Golden Horde and has survived till the present day.

I had exactly that idea. The idea was that Conan would have met a Hyrkanian while a captive; they'd hit it off and the guy (who's a much older man) would teach Conan something about other languages. Eventually they try to do a mass jailbreak; the hyrkanian dies ensuring Conan and the Aesir get away, and Conan can only watch in horror as the man is gutted like a fish. This is why he despises Hyperboreans. And DH had Conan's first lover be a Hyrkanian woman (and her death similarly haunts Conan for a long time) Interesting take on Conan and his Hyrkanian friend, Lordyam. Yeah, I think Conan befriending a northern Hyrkanian during his captivity seems likely/probable. Definitely seems more likely than Conan befriending a Hyrkanian from Turan, in the south-western area of the Vilayet sea. I just can't see REH or Conan approving of their imperialist and expansionist nature. Then again, Conan is quite an unpredictable, instinctive fellow, that's what makes him so dangerous to all civilized folk.
