Well, the moment has come at last for this story to be told 😈 Yes - the unsung moment has arrived. I anxiously await your impression with this story, Blackheart. May your visage never be reflected in the wet sheen of a foe's axe, my friend. It took me almost a week to read this story of yours, my friend (obligations and a hard day's at work) but its finally finished. And, be it so, one thing I have to say is that I like it 😊 It's full with action from the beginning, our favorite Cimmerian is well presented, it gives definitely a REHs feel when you read it and what I most like is that its a sort of continuation between Kull yarns and that of later Hyborian age. Didn't have a problem with the power of the gem, since I've always have its potency in my thoughts, from that day I read Roy Thomas Kull episode in which Tulsa Doom meet his end by joining two serpent gems in vain try to gain absolute power and he became one with nothingness. Only thing that I had second thoughts is a question: Would Conan actually return someone to life, being that he hates magic and all that goes with it. I always tough that he would think in a way "what is dead should've stay dead"... I might be wrong. But, all in all, it's a good, fine novelette and sincerely I hope that there's a sequel coming in some not to distant future. Respect, my barbarian brother 😎 Best of luck, and may Mitra guide your hand further 😉

Thanks for all the trouble you took writing and making your story available, Chris. It was highly entertaining, and I'm looking forward to reading further adventures, perhaps. However, as one who has had plenty of pronunciation problems over the years with REH's stories, you didn't do me any favours with Xotaolaianx - that one'll give a person nightmares. ...... Haha! Sorry dude, serpent doesn't translate well to Aquilonian! If you want to hear something interesting, paste it into this text-to-speech site. It does a better job than I at rendering it audible. I usually set the speed on Fast. I use that site to help me proof - hearing it sometimes makes mistakes stand out, although it does struggle with odd-balls like the one you mentioned. And thanks for your feedback - glad you enjoyed the story.

You touch on a topic I and my proofreading REH-nut best friend have discussed over many pints, my friend. Believe me, it was not a road traveled without consideration. I made it a point to refer to Conan's distaste of things dealing with supernatural and sorcery a couple times in the story to remain faithful to Howard's description of the character. But in the end his great love for the child overrode his fears as I believe it would with most. The last time I spoke with my friend about this topic I asked him - "Would you stick your arm in a box of snakes and spiders to save your son?" He said - "Absolutely." He has the utmost aversion and fear for both. And thus did Conan overcome his own natural aversion and primitive fear in his quest to save his granddaughter. It shows that the man is human, that there are things he fears, but that he is not a slave to his natural aversions. He needed Yrdihz at the impossible moment where he alone faced an army and he also wanted to test the power of the gem. Later, he used the stone on Gallardo because of several reasons - one, I liked Gallardo for the comic relief he added at the end. But in the story, I think that once they were no longer within the ensoreselled serpent chamber, he may have begun to doubt, and needed one more bit of reassurance. Seeing it work on Gallardo outside the realm of the serpent men was the last proof Conan needed - after that he knew it would save the child. Also, I think maybe he dreaded facing Sela! It might be that I can find a sentence or two to plug in to get that across more clearly? I'll ponder it. I too hope there might be a sequel. I will wait and see how it is received. As you may have noticed I left it open for a continuation. Thanks again for taking precious time to read the story, man - I appreciate it and your critique. All the best, Chris

After receiving a review of this story on Smashwords where it was called in to question if I could legally make this piece of fan fiction available due to trademarks, I wished to settle this question. Toward that end, I emailed Cabinet Entertainment LLC. 'Jay' was very kind and prompt when he replied, and said fan fiction was fine so long as it was non-commercial---which my story is. To avoid it being questioned in the future, I have added some legal verbiage. I also wished to let folks on SwordsOfREH know this as well. Will this remain the case? Who knows. With the publication of any Conan pastiches in the future (see this thread) this may certainly change. Nothing lasts forever. Certainly the day might arrive where I might be asked to take it down or face the devil. That said -- if you want it, better get it. The legal page in the download has been modified (see text in bold/blue) to add this information as follows below. Chris PS My deepest gratitude to those who have devoted their valuable time to read this yarn.
