For many years Khor Khala was regarded as a fable. Some whispered that it was a utopia, with endless summers and beauty eternal. Others spoke of a nightmare, from where tall white skinned Giants abducted poor people from the fishing villages on the vilayet, as well as from the smaller villages in hyperborea (tolerated by the Hyperboreans to keep the lower classes dependent on Hyperboreans protection.) The truth was both paradise and hell. To the native Khor Khalans it was a paradise; to everyone else it was hell. Slaves were forced to work in the quarters of the great estates, thrown into the gladiator arenas, dragged into the armies, converted into the Gurnahki, or sacrificed to create the mystical winds and eternal summer that existed in the mountains.
The only people who knew they existed for certain were the Hyperboreans, for the Khor Khalans were one of their steadiest customers for slaves. As said before, they also allowed the Gurnahki to assault the smaller poor villages on the outskirts to keep the lower classes under their thumb.
Sadly, the sacrifice of the slaves was only part of the story. In the most ancient houses of Khor Khala there was the day of farewell. Those who grew tired of their tedious existence would choose their most cherished slaves and burn themselves and their servents in a bonfire, believing their souls would ascend to the gods.
When he was 17 Maeldun of the Blood Ice Clan was abducted by Hyperboreans Raiders. His village had suffered an combination of a harsh winter and Vanir raiders. Maeldun was sold along with the few survivors of his tribe to the people of Khor Khala. Maeldun met and fell in love with Iasmini, primary slave to Lord Aishti'ana. She was the daughter of a Turanian general, and so she and Maeldun hatched a plan. They would escape and make their way to Turan, which would hopefully turn its wrath on Khor Khala and destroy it. Maeldun tried to save as many of his tribesmen as he could, refusing to leave them behind especially after he learned what happened to those too broken or infirm to fight or serve.
Sadly the escape went horribly wrong; an alarm was sprung and in the desperate flight the remnants of the blood ice tribe were slaughtered. Iasmini was one of the casualties. Maeldin escaped and the Khor Khalans thought he would die in the wild. They were wrong. Maeldun managed to reach the armies of Prince Yezdigerd, and told his tale. Yezdigerd was convinced and ultimately secured the aid of both Iasmini's father and the acolytes of the black circle. The black circle shattered the winds' allowing the Turanians to lay siege to the city. Maeldun led a small Turanian force to a gate that Iasmini had told him of, and the force was able to open the gates. The Turanian horde rushed in, catching the people off guard. Khor Khala was then destroyed in an orgy of fire and blood.
AN: this is my take on hyperborea in busiek's run with some changes. Notably I made it a city called Khor khala, that was separate from hyperborea. I wanted a backstory for a Cimmerian oc so I combine busiek's idea with part of fernado's take on hyperborea
