I recently re-read the Sword of Darkness series and noted several authors I wanted to read more of. One of the authors I really enjoyed was Richard Tierney and his character Simon of Gitta. He published "The Ring of Set," "The Scroll of Thoth," and "The Sword of Spartacus" in those collections. Fired up, I went to see if he had other stories with the character, and he sure did. Then I went to find them. Either no copies of the publications in which they were published existed for sale, or they were way too expensive. So, imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this collection. I am now reading the entire series, at a much, much lower price, and really enjoying the stories. Richard Tierney also wrote the Bran Mak Morn novel with David C. Smith, For the Witch of the Mists, and they also co-authored the Red Sonja series together.

...and an announcement for the 2nd volume: Last year’s Renegade Swords, which contained rarely reprinted stories by authors such as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and Manly Wade Wellman, was a rousing success for DMR Books. Therefore it’s only natural to follow it up with a second volume. Early March will see the release of Renegade Swords II, which, like its predecessor, will collect eight tales of sword-and-sorcery and heroic fantasy that you might not have come across.
We are proud to announce that Michael Moorcock, one of the legends of sword-and-sorcery, will be making his first appearance in a DMR Books release. Renegade Swords II will include both of his short stories that feature Rackhir the Red Archer as the protagonist: “To Rescue Tanelorn” and “The Roaming Forest.” The cover illustration for Renegade Swords II, once again by Brian LeBlanc, depicts Rackhir defending Tanelorn from the armies of Chaos.
Among the other notable tales in Renegade Swords II are “Marchers of Valhalla,” a bloody epic by Robert E. Howard; “Killer,” a collaboration between David Drake and Karl Edward Wagner; and “The Unlawful Hunter” and “The Haunting of Mara,” two stories by Keith Taylor that feature Fal the Reiver, the father of Felimid from his popular Bard novels. Renegade Swords II will be available early March in trade paperback and digital formats.
Complete table of contents:
“The Roaming Forest” by Michael Moorcock “To Rescue Tanelorn” by Michael Moorcock “Marchers of Valhalla” by Robert E. Howard “Killer” by David Drake and Karl Edward Wagner “The Unlawful Hunter” by Keith Taylor “The Haunting of Mara” by Keith Taylor “The Pool of the Stone God” by A. Merritt “Stoneskin” by John Morressy

Thanks for the reminder Hun. They've totally managed to capture the 70's S+S vibe with these. Superb covers by Brian and fantastic line ups. What a coup to have yarns from Michael Moorcock and Keith Taylor in the same volume. Dave and Deuce are doing great things over at DMR Books.

this sounds interesting but first one has to think up a good story (not easy)

Read some of these stories but need to get this collection. Anyone got recommendations for other "historic" S&S taking place in ancient Rome or around that period? Howard Andrew Jones "Desert of Souls" is gold standard of historic S&S to me, so anything like that in Rome (or elsewhere in ancient world?) would be great.

Trying to think of some true sword and sorcery set in ancient Rome and I'm coming up short. Maybe Latro of the Mist by Gene Wolfe, if you count that. It's certainly historical fantasy. As for true sword and sorcery, some classics you've probably already heard of, The Tritonian Ring by L. Sprague De Camp is pseudo-historical but it is extremely well researched. The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson is medieval rather than ancient but is actually pretty straight historical-fantasy.

Vettius and his Friends by David Drake. Also check out Bard by Keith Taylor. +3 for Bard, they are great books! That made me think of Robert Silverberg's book Roma Eterna, definitely not sword and sorcery, but a good collection of alternative history stories where Rome never fell.

Dog Brothers,
Many thanks!
I have "Vettius and his Friends" by David Drake and heartily recommend it.
Tritonian Ring by L. SPrague de Camp sounds up my alley; off to Half-Price Books!
-Mick.

You can try the Videssos Series by Harry Turtledove. One of Caesar's cohorts is transported to a world based on the Byzantine Empire of about the time Anna Comnenos. The series runs to 4 books starting with The Misplaced Legion.
