We attacked each other with swords, knives, and spears. It was a bloody mess of a battle. The screams and clashing of steel nearly deafened me. The blood flowed like a river and brains were bashed from skulls with maces and heavy cudgels. There were even women in the battle. Men and women fought well and died well.
I survived but my tribe was defeated. A few of us escaped at the last moment by rushing into the heavy woods. Some were caught but I can run fast because I am young. I discovered one of my kinsman, Uressu hiding in some brush. I suppose you could say we joined forces. later we discovered a boy of about fifteen who had a nasty cut on his shoulder. We helped him bathe it in a spring and I poured some wine into the wound. It was fairly deep but he seemed to hold up well, he also drank most of the wine. I cursed him for that naturally.
We eventually made it back to our old campsite but we only found two girls hiding there. Everyone else was dead or fled. This was the beginning of a new tribe I suppose. Just the five of us...young and scared. We were a nation unto ourselves in a manner of speaking. We walked for days until we suddenly came upon a very large city called Babylon. It was painted blue and we marveled at all the gold we saw people wearing. We felt ashamed of our rags but no one seemed to pay that much attention. All manner of people lived there. It was a fantastic experience. I traded my ornate dagger for some fruit and we ate well for the first time in many days.
We eventually decided to settle. I took a job in the army. It was very difficult and incredibly disciplined to be sure. I, being young and strong held up well and received praise from my stern officers. One of the girls joined a brothel and the other worked in a laundry. Urnot, the fifteen year old got a position drawing water for elderly people. It was steady work and the pay proved more than expected. Uressu tried to join the army too but he is almost blind in one eye and left handed. They rejected him.
Lacking anything better to do he spends his time listening to wise men lecture outside an academy. They speak while they eat their mid day meal. Uressu is fascinated and tells us everything they talk about. The stories and nearly unbelievable but I have little schooling can't say for sure.
I sometimes visit a woman. I pay her for sex and it is good. For the most part I am happy. Then we marched out to do battle. I knew it would be bloody like before but I felt much more confident in victory. We did win and I was decorated but I received wounds that kept me bed ridden for a month and longer. At last I recovered and was rewarded by being allowed to join the calvary. It took some time to learn to ride but I did learn and enjoyed horsemanship very much indeed.
There followd another battle and I found myself promoted and my pay increased. I was able to obtain my own house and better food. A woman came to live with me and we had a child. I named it Oresteray. He is strong and grows rapidly. He eats to much though.
After a few years I took my family, now grown to nine children and two wives, to live in the country. We were raided by barbarians led by a dreadful warrior chief named Conan the Cimmerian. I slew many with help from my eight sons. It was a fierce battle and three of my boys were killed but we prevailed with help from my neighbors. Conan escaped though, he rode away after kidnapping two of my youngest wives. I had grown tired of them regardless. Neither cooked well. They eventually returned to me, both heavy with Barbarian child.
After that life passed peacefully and I enjoyed farming, and occasional military service.
I am old now and have a long white beard. I have a new young wife and she is pregnant with another son...hopefully. I drink a lot of wine and eat onions everyday.
Life is good...Uressu teaches my children and I hope soon they will be considered civilized. Urnot draws water for me at my two wells. He is growing stout. I do not know what became of the women from our old tribe but I have heard that the one who became a whore married a wealthy politician and lives in a grand house. Good for her, she made many men happy. I have much respect for women, especially whores.
I am happy too and don't feel afraid of death. It is good being seventy and having twenty eight children. and I can outbox most of them, including my wives. I beat them up pretty good and then go and get drunk before taking my nap.
