www.newsarama.com/41534-marvel-s-conan-the-barbarian-creative-team-announced.html?utm_source=notificationCover by Esad Ribic Written by Jason Aaron Art by Mahmud Asrar Writer Jason Aaron, artist Mahmud Asrar, and colorist Matthew Wilson will be the first creative team on Marvel Comics' upcoming Conan the Barbarian series. As announced on Marvel.com, the series is scheduled to launch in January 2019.
"I've literally been preparing for this job since I was 13 and discovered my first Robert E. Howard Conan paperback in a used bookstore in my little hometown of Jasper, Alabama," said Aaron. "I devoured every Howard book I could find after that, and I've been making up Conan stories in my head ever since. Now I finally get to do that for real, alongside the amazing Mahmud Asrar. So this opportunity means an awful lot to me, and I'm cherishing every blood-splattered, spider-haunted second of it."
This will be Marvel's first Conan the Barbarian title in 25 years. Marvel published Conan comic books until 1993, when the license moved to Dark Horse Comics.
"The big initial arc we're doing in this new series is very much done in reverence to Robert E. Howard and those original stories," the witer said. "One of the things that initially pulled me into the character was the fact that with each story, Howard jumped to a different point in Conan's life, where he was in a different setting, interacting with different characters and living a very different life. I loved the grand and epic scope of Conan's overall journey, and so for this new series, instead of picking just one period from Conan's life and doing stories set only within that, our opening 12-issue arc will thread together many different periods and aspects of Conan's journey, from Cimmeria to Aquilonia and beyond. That's why this story is called 'The Life and Death of Conan.'"
Aaron is joined by Mahmud Asrar, who worked with him on the Generations: The Unworthy Thor & The Mighty Thor one-shot.
"Conan is the epitome of an indomitable barbarian and that has fascinated me as a kid growing up reading his stories. What made me stay for the ride was the amazing art on the Conan books throughout the years," said Asrar. "So many great artists to name but I can't tell you how influential John Buscema and his Conan art was for me. It was the first artist I knew the name of as a kid and started intentionally seeking out. Now, years later, I get the chance to draw the book myself and do it with the amazing Jason Aaron. I couldn't be happier to tell epic new tales of the Cimmerian - to continue the legacy that will hopefully make a mark on readers, just like the original comics did for me."
Esad Ribic is scheduled to draw the primary covers for the series, with editor Mark Basso overseeing the project.

Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, and Esad Ribic Lead New Conan the Barbarian Series
The new adventures begin this January!
This January, Conan makes his triumphant return to Marvel Comics in the all-new CONAN THE BARBARIAN! And today, Marvel is excited to announce the new creative team of the first series—the acclaimed team who will lead the famed barbarian into his new adventures! Legendary writer Jason Aaron will helm the new tales of the sword-slashing hero, bringing him to life alongside star artist Mahmud Asrar. Aaron and Asrar will be joined by cover artist Esad Ribic and colorist Matt Wilson. "I've literally been preparing for this job since I was 13 and discovered my first Robert E. Howard Conan paperback in a used bookstore in my little hometown of Jasper, Alabama," notes Aaron. "I devoured every Howard book I could find after that, and I've been making up Conan stories in my head ever since. Now I finally get to do that for real, alongside the amazing Mahmud Asrar. So this opportunity means an awful lot to me, and I'm cherishing every blood-splattered, spider-haunted second of it." "The big initial arc we're doing in this new series is very much done in reverence to Robert E. Howard and those original stories," explains the writer. That's why this story is called 'The Life and Death of Conan.'" "Epic tales of fantasy about one tough and mean warrior"—that's how Mahmud Asrar describes the eponymous hero. "Conan is the epitome of an indomitable barbarian and that has fascinated me as a kid growing up reading his stories. What made me stay for the ride was the amazing art on the Conan books throughout the years. So many great artists to name but I can't tell you how influential John Buscema and his Conan art was for me. It was the first artist I knew the name of as a kid and started intentionally seeking out," says Asrar. "Now, years later, I get the chance to draw the book myself and do it with the amazing Jason Aaron. I couldn't be happier to tell epic new tales of the Cimmerian—to continue the legacy that will hopefully make a mark on readers, just like the original comics did for me." "I can’t wait for readers to see the epic scope of the first story lined up for CONAN,” shares editor Mark Basso. “Like our illustrious writer and artist, my intro to Conan came in the form of an old paperback that magically found its way to me as a kid, and this team is harnessing all of that love and respect for the character’s history while expanding the Hyborian mythos in a way that’s really never been done before." "These past months have been an exciting whirlwind for us and the folks at Marvel, going through creative teams with passion for the Cimmerian,” adds Fredrik Malmberg, President & CEO of Cabinet Entertainment. “Jason and Mahmud are crafting a really strong story, it’s amazing to see the process and pages coming through. Esad Ribic’s covers evoke the classic Conan, yet with his own distinct and personal freshness. Crom!" This January, be prepared to witness the magic and mayhem of Conan in an all-new series, starting with CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1! here's a tweet by Jason Aaron. 23 minutes ago I may have threatened to fight any other writer Marvel might’ve tried to put on Conan. Thankfully it didn’t come to that. I’ve been preparing for this gig for a very long time. This shelf of Conan paperbacks I read as a kid has always been sitting right next to my desk.I hope he's picked up the Del Rey editions

I've not been reading that much over the last few years. Jason Aaron's written a considerable amount for Marvel in recent years. He's been on the Thor books for around 6 years or so. I first noticed Jason Aaron when he was on Scalped for Vertigo comics (A crime/western set in an Indian Reservation in South Dakota, based on Pine Ridge Reservation): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalped_(comics)

Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, and Esad Ribic Lead New Conan the Barbarian Series
The new adventures begin this January!
"The big initial arc we're doing in this new series is very much done in reverence to Robert E. Howard and those original stories," explains the writer. That's why this story is called 'The Life and Death of Conan.'" The first arc reminds me of what Aaron did in the first 12 issues of his Thor run. With a young Thor from the late 9th century, and Thor from the present timeline, and finally, you guessed it, the Thor of the future. If I remember correctly they faced the Godslayer or something like that, I lost interest towards the end of the story arc.

Would not be surprised to see a few similarities there, writers tend to have a story they like to go back to. I guess it's also a good way to introduce the ol' Cimmerian to a new audience.
