Interesting we have two views on the story since bob did a column about it as a police procedural. Mark brings up an interesting point: if Farnsworth had printed it, would Thoth Amon have become the antagonist for Conan LSDC eventually turned him into?

It's an interesting question because if you look at the series character that had run in Weird Tales up to that point one of the things you don't see are recurring villains. Jules de Grandin was a bloodthirsty little detective and left a trail of corpses in his wake, he very seldom - only once I think - faced the same enemy in two separate adventures. He might face vampire after vampire, but never the same vampire. It would have been an interesting development, certainly.

Thanks for the link Hun. One of the most insightful posts in the current series.

The poor guy who's never read a Conan story has to do the fragment that he's not in...talk about being thrown in the deep end!

Well done, deuce. I enjoyed the summary and analysis of this yarn.

This latest by Deuce is the best in the series in my opinion. I especially appreciated the character insights on Thespides and Yasmela. For those interested, Deuce's commentary on Yasmela can be supplemented by Karen Kohoutek's observations expressed on her panel at Howard Days 2018.
Imho Deuce should write a whole series of reviews containing his insights on each of the Conan yarns and get it published. If the Hyborian Age essay were included that would be a 22 chapter tome plus introduction. More if it were supported by supplemental material and or appendices from REH's other Hyborian Age related yarns.

I hadn't had a chance to read the website most of the day yesterday, but when I checked my phone on the subway on the way home and saw Deuce's essay was up, I pulled my glasses out of my briefcase and started reading! It really is a key yarn both chronologically and for the development of Conan's character (and Howard' writing as well). After reading it, I realized that REH pulled bits and pieces out of the previous three stories (Tower, SC and Queen) and welded them together here as a sort of lynchpin. Anytime somebody makes me look differently at something I've known for almost 40 years, you've done your work brother!

Thanks for the kind words, everybody! They are very much appreciated. As I told Bob Byrne, there were so many other things that I would've liked to bring up, but there simply wasn't room. That's without even getting into the "Hyborian Age history/lore" aspect of the tale, which is a treasure-trove. Or how BC basically proves that Mitra actually exists in some fashion. I've said before, REH's yarns--at least the upper 50%--are almost "biblical" in that there are layers upon layers of things to discover and analyze. Those who say "you need to turn off your brain" before reading a Howard tale turned theirs off a long time ago.
