After reading the Wolves Beyond the Border drafts earlier today I'm curious to see if there's any readable frontier pastiche out there. The Black Stranger and Beyond the Black River are classics and I'm going to give those a reread, but wouldn't mind something fresh.
Any suggestions?

The first one that comes to mind is Moon of Blood by deCamp and Carter. Takes place in the frontier against the Picts; I really don’t recall much about the story because it’s been over 30 years since I’ve read it, but I seem to remember it being alright. It’s in the collection Conan the Swordsman from Bantam. Most of the short stories in this book were readable, and far better than the novels of Conan written by these two. Generally speaking, Conan seems to work best in short stories or novella length.

Thanks, I picked up that collection a while back thinking the concept, short stories set over Conan's career was interesting. This will give me a reason to crack it open.

Definitely worth a crack open. I put Moon of Blood towards the top of the pile, but they're all generally good reads.

This appears to have some action on the Frontier, too. Sadly, I can't stand anything with Conn in it. Although it appears he's not a major player. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_at_the_Demon's_Gate How was this novel, both the Pictish Frontier portion, and overall?

for the most part old Conan was smart enough to stay out of Injun country...try the biography of Davy Crockett...good stuff, he even told andy Jackson to kiss his axe once and went hunting to keep the army from starving...later though he saved president jackson from an assasin
