I would like to see a Conan film directed by Mel Gibson. Who would you pick for the job?

Possibly because it's fresh in my mind, but both myself and my wife were really impressed recently with Alita Battle Angel by Robert Rodriguez.

That may be, but Mel Gibson is a great director and actor. Watch the battle scene in Braveheart. When I first saw this film, I thought to myself, ( This is the guy to direct a Conan film ). Being a fan doesn't always equal a good movie, sometimes it's the opposite.

The funny thing about Alita Battle Angel is that it does not feel like a movie directed by Rodriguez. He's sort of one of those directors that's past his prime; he has been making a lot of mediocre movies over the past few years. I do agree with you that a Conan film directed by him COULD be great. It would be like flipping a coin with him, sometimes he makes great stuff, other times he makes steaming piles of shit!

I threw one out there who just released an awesome movie and who is an avowed Howard fan and a Frazetta collector. Lots of good directors have 'taken dumps' on the silver screen. But you didn't name who you would prefer - which is kinda the point of the thread. So...let's hear it! Another pick of mine would be Guillermo del Toro. His stuff is really dark, and he can certainly pull off the action stuff (ref Hellboy, Pacific Rim, etc). His Shape of Water was excellent, IMO. Pan's Labyrinth was also awesome, loved it. If only he could get the green light to do At the Mountains of Madness. He's been trying for years.

Guillermo's main problem is he announces upcoming projects at a Neil Young-like rate with an almost equal release ratio. Then again, something relatively out of nowhere like Shape of Water worked out for him so...

Hmmm...well, I never thought I'd be even interested in something from the guy who wrote Rampage, but I'm mourning it didn't get a chance. So you never who's out there.

I'd be happy with Rodriguez or del Toro. It would be great to see what del Toro would do with some of the monsters from the Conan tales.
Frank Darabont expressed an interest in doing a "smart" Conan starring Jon Bernthal a few years ago, which would be interesting to see.
Another person who could be good is Neil Marshall. He's got a horror background which is good for a Howardian Conan, the creatures in the Descent are practically the Worms of the Earth. He's also directed historical/fantasy stuff with the Centurion and the Blackwater and Watchers on the Wall episodes of GoT. Having said that, the new Hellboy is apparently terrible so maybe not.

Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson mashup? I would be very interested in seeing Peter Jackson take a shot at Conan. I reckon he would he would give this property the respect it deserves.

Peter Jackson would probably give us a great "sanitized" version of Conan with awesome CGI effects, but Mel Gibson would give us emotional impact and gore. I would love to see a Conan movie done with the success and impact of Gladiator. I think that Mel Gibson would be the director to do this. Just my opinion.

Some of Peter Jackson's very early stuff, though very amateurish as it was early in his career, was full of gore and very dark, but I feel that Jackson would respect the source material of Robert E. Howard. I have no qualms about Mel having a go at Conan either, but I really hope who ever does do it eventually, does give respect to the source material. I guess that is why I would probably prefer to see a TV series done moreso, but both would be fine.
