IMO his style "comes to life" in color, I don't really care for his black and white.

It's sad how much of the original art is lost when printing comics. Original Colored As Printed

Huge BWS fan, I have Opus 1 & 2 permanently on the coffee table. His work inspired me to hone my art skills, study at art school and have gained a 30 year career as a graphic designer. All set in motion from a Conan comic book I purchased as a child in the 1970s.

Monsters Art & Story by Barry Windsor-Smith Created over a period of 35 years, Barry Windsor-Smith' Monsters is a tour de force of visual storytelling. Part family drama, part espionage thriller, part metaphysical journey, it is an intimate portrait of individuals struggling to reclaim their lives and an epic political odyssey across two generations of American history. Monsters is rendered in Windsor-Smith's impeccable technique, the visual storytelling being the most sophisticated of the artist's career. There are passages of heartbreaking tenderness, of excruciating pain, and devastating violence. It is surely one of the most intense graphic novels ever drawn.

Barry Windsor-Smith is incredibly talented -- and an artist, the real deal. So many aspects of his work in the Marvel comic book CONAN THE BARBARIAN and elsewhere impel me to rave. The exquisite detail he put into buildings, gardens, jewelry, weapons, monsters, garments. The cinematic quality of sequences like the tavern scene that opens "The Tower of the Elephant" was impossible to forget. The "fat, gross rogue" bragging of how he would kidnap and enslave a Brythunian girl before morning was the living end in fat gross rogues. The four small panels in which Conan's hand falls on his shoulder as he swills his wine, the kidnapper's face changes, he turns his head slowly and warily, and looks disconcerted as he meets young Conan's gaze, really is a case of every picture being worth a thousand words. And issue #24, "The Song of Red Sonja" was Smith at the top of his stride on Conan. One of the greats.
