Love the Del Rey books, but I always wondered why they switched covers for the Horror volume. If I recall correctly, the original cover design showed some sort of Cthulhu creature and instead they ended up with a Solomon Kane image. Cthulhu would have fit the horror concept a lot better, in my opinion.

Swords of the North is excellent, I've read "Marchers of Valhalla" and "Valley of the Worm" in there so far and I already feel I got my money's worth. I still need to pick up the latter two books you mentioned.

I also think at the time, Cthulhu wasn't THAT big yet.

Rusty Burke might know the reason...or might not. Personally, I was more let down by Del Rey going for Bradstreet over Kaluta for El Borak. Bradstreet is damned good n' all (I've been a fan since '92), but MWK pretty much owns Gordon and O'Donnell the way Frazetta does Conan. A definite missed opportunity. Here is the Staples painting you're talking about:

Yeah, I thought that this would have looked more horror-like than a Solomon Kane image.

I still have to get Swords of the North myself, it came out in a very tight cash period for me (which I'm still kind of in!). I currently don't have a lot of reading time either, hopefully that will change next year once my girlfriend finishes school next month.

Another question: I think I have all of the Del Rey collections but I can't find Almuric in any of them. Am I missing a volume, or hasn't it been included anywhere in the Del Reys?

There've been almost 30 editions of Almuric published in the last 20yrs. Del Rey and the REH guys like Burke and Louinet didn't see the point. I would probably go for the Paizo edition. Here are all of the Del Rey REH editions: howardworks.com/ballantine-delrey.html
Howard Works is every REH fan's friend.

I found a copy of the Almuric paperback on my shelf, but I really thought I had seen it somewhere in one of the compilation volumes. Strange.
Like the howardwords link, by the way. I'd never been there.

I finally ordered Sword Woman. That's last of the Del Reys I need/want, granted I'm skipping the two best of volumes.

I bought the Best Ofs...because I wanted all of them and for no other real reason.

I like most of Howard’s work, and some of the Conan tales are great, but he really hits his stride writing historical adventure.

I'd never been there. It ended up in one of the Foundation Press volumes, which is where I picked it up. Yes, I know the question is 2-1/2 years old...
