Besides the environmental effect of adding an invasive species, I never considered the risk of all the diseases we cook pork so thoroughly to avoid. I wonder how many people figured out that "rare" pork chops was not the way to go... "When Worlds Collide," eh?

"It would be a strange thing if six nations of ignorant savages should be capable of forming a scheme for such an union [Iroquois Confederation] and be able to execute it in such a manner as that it has subsisted ages and appears indissoluble; and yet that a like union should be impracticable for ten or a dozen English colonies, to whom it is more necessary and must be more advantageous and who cannot be supposed to want an equal understanding of their interests."

I wonder how many people figured out that "rare" pork chops was not the way to go... "When Worlds Collide," eh? Exactly. I've read more than once that Native Americans appear to have stronger genetic defenses against native parasites than microbes, which would make sense, since they never went all-in on domestication. Domesticated animals are a major source/vector of communicable diseases. Smallpox came from cowpox, for instance. Swine-borne diseases seem to have decimated the deer population, which the Injuns definitely depended on along with their quite-advanced agriculture.
