I'm just here to give mad props to Joe Jusko -- what a great artist - as far as Thuvia, Carthoris, John Carter....I recall it was always Dejah Thoris' job to disentangle JC from the girlfriend of the episode... Charles--you're absolutely right. They'd swoon at JC's feet, and Dejah would have to talk them down. Thuvia is, you'll have to admit, a different story, however. That's a complex situation, no matter if you're human or Barsoomian! Jusko's got mad skills. Wish I could paint like that. Hoping to meet him at the ECOF this summer, if all works out. Met many wonderful folk in the ERB world--authors, artists, etc, the last couple years. It's a fascinating experience. Here's an album with a few photos from the 2017 Dum-Dum, if you're interested. I need to make a folder of the 2018 Dum-Dum sometime, too. We've only been to those two events, but enjoyed both immensely.

Jusko, I believe, paints all his Barsoomians without navels, as they hatch from eggs

Great thoughts. I wish that Burroughs would have gone into some of the mysteries of Barsoom and given us more tales.

looks fun! I need to keep a sharper lookout for this stuff and attend one of these, and/or Howard Days.
Is that a Barsoom RPG they are playing. I ran a homebrewed Barsoom game based on D&D back in the day, fun stuff.

I may be totally wrong about this, but I seem to recall that the Barsoom stories were originally published as a serial and not as full novels. (I know that several of Zelazny's novels were spread over a couple of issues of a magazine, but most of the Conan material was published one complete story at a time.)
I'm curious about the serialization of the Barsoom books. Does anyone know... (1) In what magazines were the Barsoom stories serialized? (2) How many magazines per book? (In other words, was Barsoom spread out over a chapter at a time, a third of a book at a time, or what?)
I'm wondering about this because I am re-reading the Barsoom series from scratch and think it would be interesting to know where the cliffhangers were when the originals were published.

At least the first couple of books were serialized in "The All-Story" magazine. The first novel was originally published as "Under the Moons of Mars" in All-Story. More details you can find on Wikipedia, www.edgariceburroughs.com and probably on various Burroughs fansites.

Honestly, I want to like it but for some reason it doesn't resonate with me. The writing style is just too different from ERB's somehow.

Agreed! The dude has a killer style! Another from Bill's site. ERBzine is an absolute wealth of information. I told Bill once he is a pillar in the ERB community; and he really is, with his exhaustive documentation of all things ERB.
