Savage Avengers really isn't bad. I just read it and I am definitely looking forward to the next issue however, I do have some minor quibbles: 1. Does anyone find these reads a bit too short? It seems as if there hasn't been much action these past 3 or 4 issues and I do feel one of the major reasons could be that they take time to introduce too many new characters. I think it would've been better if they had all just stuck with the original team like the first 5 issues but that's just me. Nevertheless, I still absolutely love this title, maybe even more than the main title. 2. The characterization of Conan is just... off. I can't really tell what it is but it could be that they characterize him as a brawny bodybuilder with no remorse and goes berserk just because he can. In a way that is Conan but there's much more to him that they aren't implicating. 3. Too many subplots. I think this may be a technique to spread the stories over multiple issues but I'd rather they just end the whole Kulan Gath thing and go on with a completely separate adventure if necessary. I think they are overrating Gath because Conan did kill him, more than once but at least they provided a reason for why he was so powerful. Read this today, I kinda like this series, it is unfortunately, the most entertaining series featuring Conan since his return to Marvel. I agree, it felt like this issue could do with a few more pages, I read this issue in 5 minutes. I also agree, that there is something not quite right about Conan in these comics. Gerry Duggan needs to demonstrate to the reader that there's a lot more to the Cimmerian than the generic barbarian out of time thing they got going now. He should surprise other team members with his intelligence every so often. I don't mind too much if it takes a few more issues to kill or defeat Kulan Gath, as long as it don't take 50 issues to do so One thing I like about this version of Conan is that chronologically, it is set just after the QotBC run, basically just after the first Roy Thomas run on CtB. Maybe, Marvel should consider an alternate timeline for Conan in the Savage Avengers and all the other Conan books? Conan's career beyond issue CtB 115 should no longer be a certainty! Will he remain in the 21st century and become an Avenger? Or work as a specialist in ancient languages and archaeology at some University by day and fight crime by night? Or become the Herald of Galactus or the new Thor? Or will he eventually return to the Hyborian Age with completely new adventures! Will it be possible for Conan to become King Of Aquilonia? What if Kulan Gath returns to the Hyborian Age for revenge? Will Conan be the only one with enough knowledge to defeat him? I dunno. What do you think?

I 100% agree that this is the best rendition of Conan I've seen since Conan the Slayer. And yes, chronologically, I think that it is confusing that if this did occur after QotBC it wouldn't make sense for Conan to return to the hyborian age and be the same. (fun fact I only started reading the original Conan the barbarian series a few months ago although I did own about 250 of the issues. I know I'm really late but I am conveniently smack in the middle of the QotBC arc at issue 78 I think). Also I'm confused as to how Conan 2099 fits into all this. Did he go back to his time and like lived forever or did he just remain trapped here? The only instance of Conan's intelligence that I've seen so far is him learning to speak Spanish.

I'd not worry too much about continuity with Conan 2099, it is all over the place at Marvel anyway. But, It would be interesting if Conan did remain in the modern era. I'm jealous, you're reading the Roy Thomas run for the 1st time. I hope you enjoy the QotBC issues. Have you read any SSOC issues?

I'm jealous, you're reading the Roy Thomas run for the 1st time. I hope you enjoy the QotBC issues. Have you read any SSOC issues? Yes of course. The SSOC comics and the Conan Saga reprints were my first exposure to Conan, needless to say I was hooked. My first Conan book was Conan Saga #89 and that followed up with SSOC and Indiana Jones. I lived in South America for 13 years and the comics selection was very limited there. I live in New York now and taking the opportunity to read Conan was one of the first things I did. I have well over 700 Conan comics and to think, at the beginning of the year I didn't have a single issue of the CtB run and now I almost have them all. Now because of CoViD, I have the time to catch up on reading. I have read basically everything Dark Horse put out but now that I'm reading the Roy Thomas original run, I am absolutely flabbergasted by the quality which is unfortunately in stark contrast with the current Marvel run. Savage Avengers is surprisingly good, reminds me of the old Marvel What if..? series. Speaking of which, the Conan vs. Wolverine illustrated by Gary Kwapisz is absolutely great. I absolutely love that guy's art. Marvel should honestly tap Gary in for a couple of issues, Maybe even just an annual. The Art in Savage Avengers is also good right now. Zircher is doing an amazing job and I think that's one of the things that makes me like this title more than the Conan main run. And I completely agree with you. I do love the prospect of Conan in the modern world, as long as they keep the stories like Savage Avengers and don't go about butchering the character like battle for the serpent crown did. In fact, I will just ignore the fact that battle for the serpent crown ever happened and I'll hope for more great issues of Savage Avengers to come. Anyways it does seem like Marvel is getting a grip on things with their plans for King size Conan in December. As I'm writing this, I am reading yet anther issue of the original CtB. It's honestly an immersive experience but as someone who read it before, is the title any good after Roy Thomas leaves? How good is Jim Owsley or Chuck Dixon?

It's honestly an immersive experience but as someone who read it before, is the title any good after Roy Thomas leaves? How good is Jim Owsley or Chuck Dixon? The Jim Owsley run is good, I think it starts around issue 172 - the writing in the preceding issues between the runs by Roy Thomas and Jim Owsley not so much. Nevertheless, there's still some great art by John Buscema in those issues, but when it comes to the writing and continuity, forget it - CtB loses its way dramatically on that front. I love the Chuck Dixon run on SSOC, starting with issue 133 till around the 180s. There's some great art by Gary Kwapisz and Ernie Chan in these issues. The writing by Dixon is pretty good with some great stories. A word of warning about Chuck Dixon's run is that he is not overly concerned about the continuity or the geography of Conan's world sometimes, still it is a fantastic run. As you can probably tell I really love this version of Conan.

It certainly was a quick read, but I am not looking for anything too deep when it comes to this series. Thought Conan and Magik paired really well.

What do you guys think about Deadpool and Knull being in savage Avengers 17? From what I understand, Marvel is gonna continuously add new characters to the series and I'm fine with that as long as the characters fit well and don't seem forced into the story just for the sake of it being a crossover.

Looks like Deadpool will remain in Savage Avengers during the King in Black. This is the Conan I'd like to see in Savage Avengers. They focus on his muscles and brawn but they seem to disregard his numerous other capabilities. I love Savage Avengers but honestly, giving Conan his 70s characterization back would make the title so much better. I like that Duggan evolves his style over the issues and I think he's getting there in terms of writing.

Yeah, Conan's instinctive nature and intelligence is lacking in Marvel's recent interpretation.

SAVAGE AVENGERS #16Written by by Gerry Duggan Art by Patch Zircher Cover by Valerio Giangiordano Magik joins Conan with guest Avenger the Black Knight andā¦the Juggernaut. An Asgardian dragon with the second eye of Agamotto doesn't stand a chance. Or maybe he does. Either way, the Sweet Sixteenth of this comic is going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight that will punch you upside the head. Fair warning.
