Several different versions of what might have been Jimi Hendrix's First Rays of the New Rising Sun. There's "my" version, based on the 1997 release with My Friend removed, Bleeding Heart & Drifters Escape from South Saturn Delta and Come Dow Hard on Me and Lover Man from the 2000 box set added. Then I did a playlist of "What If in 1975 Alan Douglas decided to not trash everything from the previous 4 years and made a First rays from what was there?" 9 tracks from Cry of Love 5 from Rainbow Bridge, 4 from War Heroes and 2 from Loose Ends. The same songs except Pali Gap in place of Lover Man but the sequencing is based on the above albums. Then I just did one based on a songfest that was on a tape box in Electric Lady Studios with three of the four sides broken down. Again all the same songs but Valleys of Neptune in place of Lover Man/Pali Gap. It's like thinking about "What would REH have written next had he lived? Conan? El Borak? Breck Elkins?" What might have been... Very cool. I've always thought that "Voodoo Chile Blues" was vastly underrated: They actually took a piece of the released version and plugged it into an unreleased take for completeness. The back and forth between Hendrix and Winwood is pretty wild stuff.

The Cult. Going to see them at an outdoor festival on Saturday, looking forward to seeing them live, along with others like Helix, Sass Jordan, The Trews, Tom Keifer (from Cinderella) and others. It's been s while since I went to a concert, but at 51, I still like to rock out...

Sometimes, just by accident, you come across something you had forgotten, and suddenly find yourself again. Happened to me when browsing youtube again. Found this song.... from the time, when I was in my early teens, and we only 2 TV channels in Finland. No music TV or movie fantasy available. This thing was shown and played on TV only because of the fact, that Finland won Ice dancing world championship that year, and the skaters Susanna Rahkamo, an Petri Kokko, display their performance in it. It's more about the video, really, but I remember how the song and the video and the general atmosphere just cracked my head open and imprinted itself in my growing brain! I sort of lost my fantasy/scifi-entertainment virginity to it, hehe. Much love <3

Listening to a lot of Cinderella lately. I seen Tom Keifer in concert this summer, and I was impressed with his stage presence and his obvious skill on a plethora of various guitars. I liked the band back in the day, but never really paid a lot of attention to the music. Tom's distinctive voice matched with crunchy, bluesy hard rock is far better than I remembered from those hazy days back in the 80's. They performed an acoustic version of "Don't know what you've got, till it's gone" that was awesome. Great fun re-discovering bands of my youth, and finding out they don't suck!

I was always a big advocate of Cinderella. Kieffer did a great job of combining AC/DC and Aerosmith. We played "Somebody Save Me" in my first band.

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR is a great young English guitarist and songwriter. i cant stop listening to her latest cd - 'WILD'. Superb blues-rock music. ==== VOLBEAT s latest cd "Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie" is very good heavy rock n roll entertainment. Great singer & great guitar licks. ====

'In my Sword I Trust' by Ensiferum I'd never heard these guys. There's a cool Celtic vibe in there. Thanks, Crimson!

Over the past month I did some Derek & the Dominos listening, doing the original mix of Layla, comparing mixes of the material for the unreleased 2nd album, then going back and comparing the mixes to Eric's first album (Delaney Bramlett did the first which was rejected by Atlantic, Eric tried doing a mix of his own, before Tom Dowd came in and took care of things).
Then I got into a Band of Gypsys mode with the new release of the band's first set at the Fillmore on 12/31/69. I just listened to it over the summer in a booted version, but boy, what some Eddie Kramer mixing and Bernie Grundman mastering will do! Then I listened to the first set on Jan 1 and it is amazing how different the band sounded a day later, topped off by the masterful version of Machine Gun. They still need to do a proper release of that set (the most recent DVD included much of the set remixed in 5.1 from a videotaped version).

I've been listening to a lot of Ministry lately - everything from the early 80's synth pop to the late 80's industrial metal and beyond.
I always find it so interesting that Al Jourgensen went from this...
...to this, in only a matter of a few years:
And I enjoy it all.
