I'm pretty there's a post somewhere about this new Elric novel by Moorcock, anyways: Michael Moorcock, The Citadel of Forgotten Myths
Elric and his constant companion Moonglum return in this new stand alone novel set within the early days of Elric's wanderings. They ride again to investigate the history of their empire, Melniboné, and its dragons, known as the Phroon, in this exciting new addition to the Elric Saga from World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Michael Moorcock.
The estranged emperor of the Melnibonéan empire, Elric is struggling with his nature and the constant thirst of his soul-sucking sword, Stormbringer. He wants his dying empire to thrive, but is he up to the task of renewing his failing people? Recruiting his best friend Moonglum, he hunts across his lands for the great Citadel of Forgotten Myths, seeking the answers to the nature of the dragons of The Young Kingdoms, and hope that the decline can be averted. But others have their own plans, and the journey will not be easy.
Taking place between the first and second book in the Elric Saga, The Citadel of Forgotten Myths is perfect for longtime fans and those new to this epic fantasy series.Publisher : Gollancz Language : English Hardcover : 336 pages ISBN-10 : 1399600370 ISBN-13 : 978-1399600378 £22 $28.99

The book happens before the Fall of Melniboné, yet Moonglum is there while Elric met him only after the city was sacked. Am I missing something? Are my memories wrong?

I like the way the Melniboneans are portrayed in Michael Moorcocks Elric saga, that is, unearthly, callous, cruel and hedonistic, finding pleasure in torturing humans. They are somewhat elfin in their background, and I think an accurate depiction of the race, old legends and myths describe most elfin encounters with humans in a negative way, such as causing illness or abducting people.
Elric, withdrawn and self loathing, not relating to the traditions of his people, but not human at the same time, a kind of anomaly in the Melnibonean world.
It's funny, but when I think of the right casting for the role of Conan I think of some tough guy actor that would do the Cimmerian justice, but when it comes to Elric it's more along the lines of Alice Cooper, or even Keith Richards from the Stones wielding Stormbringer. I mean you wouldn't get them to play Elric, but as a starting point if you wanted to make a movie about the doomed antihero.

The Elric Saga Vols 1 & 2 by Michael Moorcock, Saga Press 2022 Thanks Hun. Those saga press editions with Whelan covers and full colour maps look awesome and they've chosen some great internal pics to go with them. They look great enough to stand beside the Centipede Press Fafhrd and Grey Mouser books you mentioned in the F+GM thread. Gonna have to track down a full contents list - they look like weighty tomes.

Amazon.com's release date seems to be 6th December 2022, which is interestingly the same day the new Conan Blood of the Serpent is released. A new Elric and a new Conan novel released on the same day!

Moorcock's Melniboneans were strongly influenced by the amoral elves of Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword I believe. Regarding actors for Elric - what about David Bowie? The current House of the Dragons seems to have a couple of actors who could potentially handle portraying Elric esp Matt Smith who imho would make for a great Yrkoon as well. Elric himself is perhaps somewhat closer in nature to King Viserys in some respects? Just a few thoughts anyhow.

Yes, I could see David Bowie as Elric back in the day, but not just because of his performance in Labyrynth from 86, myself, I would get him to channel some of Major Tom into it. "junkie, strung out in heaven's high, hitting an all-time low".

You'd need to have gotten him in the Ziggy-Aladdin Sane era, once you get to Thin White Duke, it's passed him already.
Matt would be a great choice but you can only do some many characters with white hair unfortunately.

Well, Elric is fully albino so there would be that aspect to differentiate Matt in another white haired role should the prospect ever arise.

Most of my familiarity with Matt Smith's work came by way of his portrayal as an incarnation of the Doctor, but I think he should be given a shot at playing Elric.

Yeah, his run as the Doc was probably the best of the new Who before the scripts became too overtly radical. Admittedly Jodie Whittaker is right if you are casting a woman as the Doctor, but I know what you mean with the scripting. Reminds me, think one of my favourite Doctors, the tenth Doctor David Tennant will be appearing in the 60th anniversary special right around now. I suppose with the success of past shows such as Game of Thrones and The Witcher there hasn't been much interest in an Elric show or film at this present time.
