I've read up to and including 'Baptism of Fire' and enjoyed them all so far. It was a good few years ago now, but I remember the translation being a bit dodgy in the first couple. It got better after that, and didn't necessarily detract from the experience, anyway.

I've enjoyed what I read in the first book. It's actually a collection where he leans into Grimm's Fairy Tales for inspiration then writes s&s short stories. He uses them as a jumping off point with Geralt as the main character.
All the ones I read were very well done. These are the classic Grimm Brothers, dark with twists.

I had actually forgotten about The Witcher Prequel "Rainbow Coalition" until this thread......
Even from the first season Cavil/Geralt was treated as a secondary character, my wife assumed Yennefer was "The Witcher".
I'm all for strong female leads, but I don't get the modern trend of where the writers feel that all the male characters need to be "neutered" to accomplish it?
I have not read the books and only played the video games for a few minutes, so I'm not that familiar with the source material, but my favorite episodes were the "monster of the week" format, I lost interest with the heavy world building/fantasy politics.

To be far on the show, your complaints here are the complaints I had with many of the Witcher books. I've read four of them in chronological order, the first two are short story collection that strictly focus on Geralt's monster hunter exploits, the first two are great! But after that—not so much. Geralt is heavily sidelined(practically a side character)and the books are loaded with world building/fantasy politics, which I don't care for.

I thought the episodes cleaving closest to the earlier yarns featuring Geralt in his monster hunting role were the best of the series but it began to go pear shaped in episode 2 of season two where they introduced and killed fan favourite character Eskel in a single episode. I've not read the books but have encountered many comments online from book fans saying that the series is quite faithful in season one but the storyline veers considerably from the books from episode 2 season 2.

I never understood all the unfair treatment and shit the studios put on Henry Cavill, this and the DC Superman. If he never showed any interest in the projects and acted like a fruit loop, like Ezra Miller, Hollywood would be fawning all over him.

Heaven forbid you want to actually make it a good show and put a lot of effort into it. Sounds like the same thing going on over on Wednesday, Jenna Ortega got the scripts, she'd go "Wait, she wouldn't be doing that." and tried to change things...and SHE'S the problem! The story gave a couple of examples and she was 100% correct. And they wonder why their profits are plummeting...
Can you imagine the Conan show-"Wait...you READ the stories?!? Why do that? Just go give this monologue about your co-dependence with Belit..."

I read somewhere that on alot of these shows they deliberately hire writers who are unfamiliar with the source material. Can't make this stuff up.
