Are any of the short stories collected in this book a worthwhile read? I noticed my local library has this book and was curious if it was any good. The reason I'am asking instead of reading it myself is because I do not wish to taint my fond memories of Conan if this is terrible.

They're not horrible. Pretty much on par with the pastiche stories in the main Ace editions.

Most of the stories have been adapted in SSOC: "Legions of the Dead" (SSOC 39) "The People of the Summit" (SSOC 3) "Shadows in the Dark" (I can't remember an adaptation of this) "The Star of Khorala" (SSOC 44) "The Gem in the Tower" (SSOC 45) "The Ivory Goddess" (SSOC 60) "Moon of Blood" (SSOC 46)

I thought a couple were ok. I really wanted to like Moon of Blood because of the Conan vs Picts angle, but it was, meh...

Worth a read...once. Scott had it about right.
As for SSOC, they never did Shadows in the Dark since LDC wasn't letting them do adaptations of his stories at that point, so Roy did his own story to go after Black Colossus in SSOC #3. Once they made the deal to do the adaptations, there was no point to do this one so it's unadapted. So for the aftermath of BC, we have versions from LDC, Roy and Tim, take your pick.

"The People of the Summit", and "The Gem in the Tower" are pretty cool.

I read "Shadows in the Dark" and personally I found it horrible and a really lasy second part of "Black Colossus".

I read "Shadows in the Dark" and personally I found it horrible and a really lasy second part of "Black Colossus". As I mentioned in one of the other threads, there's no good story telling how Conan left Khojara. Tim got it close but he had Iron Shadows right after BC which doesn't really work in my mind. DeCamp's story is lackluster and Roy's is too melodramatic. But my idea of what happened (Conan just got bored and left) may not make an interesting story.

"Legions of the Dead" reviewed. Tim Kirk map. Marvel Comics scans. And a rare advertising article from Bantam Books. Check it out.

Funny enough, this happens to be on my holiday reading list. So far Legions of the Dead is my fave from the book. Would have liked to read the SSOC adaptations first but the omnibuses are a bit on the large side to be lugging about.
