I think he needs to update that post a bit re: the dead David Yates directed film from Warners.

I actually just ordered Tarzan and the Lost City from some Good Will store via Amazon. I love Opar, but I'm open to a more fantastic interpretation, too. I'm looking forward to checking out the film. Looks like Legend of Tarzan is still doing pretty good - www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=tarzan2016.htmBy the end of its worldwide theatrical run it should easily get to 180 million, ideally you want to double that, though, at least that's what I hear. Hopefully the home video market, streaming, etc.. will generate enough revenue to convince Warner Brothers to do a sequel.

Does seem to be holding up relatively well, placing 3rd the past couple of days.
With marketing and the overseas cut of distribution, you'd like to ideally get to 2 1/2 to 3 times your production budget before you can safely say you're in profitable territory. That's what really killed John Carter. It did actually make back the $250 million worldwide, but all the additional outlays made it very tough to break even.
For this film, I'm sure they'd like to be north of $400 million worldwide at the end of the theatrical run, and between $450-$500 million should mean profits for somebody (you know Hollywood accounting!) Since it's Warners, it'll probably be on HBO early next year. Not sure what kind of streaming deal Warners has with everybody.

Just saw "The Legend of Tarzan. It is the best Tarzan movie I have ever seen, and the truest to ERB. It is the first movie to acknowledge that Tarzan's apes, the Mangani, were neither chimp nor gorilla.

Just got back from seeing it this morning, loved it. They took a LOT from the books including the characterizations of Tarzan and Jane, many of the native characters, the Mangani and several plot points. They even referred to several of the other films, including Greystoke and the MGM Tarzans. The changes they made were well within reason to try to make a coherent, relevant story. And we even get to see Korak! I would like to see a sequel or two, the next one in a more grounded-in-the-real-worl version of Opar, then possibly a WWI story. Don't know if we'll see any, but the fact it's been in the top 5 at the box office for most of its run says there is a market for it. Just budget it correctly.

If you wanna make a Tarzan movie, there's no need for a big budget. Here's an interesting look at how was done in Turkey, with 'Tarzan in Istanbul', 1952 and 'Tarzan the Mighty,' 1974'

Turkish cinema certainly has an interesting take on the idea of "Intellectual Property".

Turkish cinema certainly has an interesting take on the idea of "Intellectual Property". Burroughs was bootlegged/pastiched all the time, especially in Muslim countries and Russia.

That is strange, but it does look like it got dropped from a lot of theaters this weekend. It's not playing anywhere in central NJ or Brooklyn, and just a few theaters in Manhattan and Northern NJ. Glad I saw it a couple weeks ago!

I went to the Burroughs Bibliophiles Dum Dum convention this past weekend and had a great time. Look forward to my convention report in the coming days

Finally showed up at #14 this past weekend. It's down to less than 650 theaters. It'll probably slow walk to about $125 million in the US over the next week or two. Overall worldwide it's at $335 million, so it may get to the "twice the budget, breaking even" magic number of $360 million, but the $400 million that would almost certainly get a sequel looks a little out of reach for the theatrical run.
