I picked up a copy of this a while back on eBay and just got around to taking a few pictures. David Ireland did the illustrations. I probably need to grab a few more of these Grant editions if the price is right.

Howard inspired a ton of great art, we owe him that too, and not jus the awesome tales

I seem to recall that this is the only thing I ever bought from one of the eBay emails saying "we found something you might like"...

Reading this story tonight, in honor of the passing of Howard on this day 84 years ago. This story is one of my favorites, top three for sure!

I've picked up all of the Grant books in this series, aside from Pool of the Black One (still looking). I really like the presentation and large print (yep, I'm getting older) but the quality of the illustrations vary widely. Some of them, like Queen of the Black Coast, look like they signed on a high school student for the art. But others are quite good (Red Nails, as an example). Still, they are very nice and well worth having in one's collection.

I know they're still trying to get Harold Lamb's Rusudan out but not having any luck. Maybe in time for its hundredth in 2031.

I was lucky enough to own all the Grant Conan series at one time. The production quality was very good. The differing artistic styles actually detracted from the tales they illustrated. In my opinion only. What caused me to sell them? The Wandering Star Editions. Better manufacturing and much better artists. Both series feature original Howard texts, which until that time had only been published in Weird Tales or Arkham editions. The Gnome Press series had a couple of Howard tales but had edits by DeCamp, as well as tales by DeCamp, Carter and Nyborg. The photo copied text of the Berkley Editions were shoddy, even with Ken Kelly's help, but again my opinion. Finally Wandering Star put out some high quality collections, and I was able to sell the inferior editions.I remember being off put by the price, but I went ahead and bought them knowing I would own them until I died. Donald Grant did some wonderful editions, Sowers of the Thunder and the second version of Red Shadows are excellent examples. Grant will forever be my hero for his passion of keeping Howard in print. I still own multiple Grant books, some are great others are not well made. The ones I still own are in my collection forever.
Just this pilgrims 2 cents.
