'The Long Ships' the movie is a riot. I'll have to read the book.

'The Long Ships' the movie is a riot. I'll have to read the book. IMO, the novel blows it away.

Pretty cool, considering the time period. This could've easily gone on the "Viking Stuff" thread, but what the hell. Six here, half-dozen the other. Thanks, Trescuinge!

Good news for those who don't have these great books, or if you are looking to replace you aging Zebra paperbacks.

One of my all-time favorites! Harsh, bloody and kick ass. Yet written with some real flair and skill.

I started reading the Broken Sword and I'm about 50 pages in. So far it's fantastic, but I find myself enjoying the Valgard chapters and character much more than Skafloc. It probably has something to do with Valgard being a berserker.
I didn't realize this was a historical fantasy, always thought it was pure fantasy using a Norse Mythological influence as an alternate world, but boy was I wrong.

A classic essay by Steve Tompkins: leogrin.com/CimmerianBlog/an-early-albeit-pagan-christmas-in-the-old-north/As usual for Steve (RIP), it's wide-ranging. I had a hard time choosing where to post this. However, the main theme is the legendary Nordic blade, Tyrfing. The essay explores the influence of Tyrfing on fantasy and also looks at many of the Norse sagas. Well worth reading.
