I'm on a fantasy movie kick, and I watched The Beastmaster, from 1982, starring Marc Singer. This was one of those cheapie swords & sorcery flicks that came out back then. It was among several in that genre. They came out with the rage that began with Conan The Barbarian: Sword and the Sorcerer, Deathstalker, Ator and the Kingdom of Spiders, Hawk The Slayer, Dragonslayer, Red Sonja, and a slew of others. Most were very low budget with bad acting, bad writing, and bad production values. I saw many of them, back then, and for me, The Beastmaster was one of the best. I like it better than Conan The Destroyer.
While watching it, it occurred to be that The Beastmaster could easily be set during the Hyborian Age. It's a true sword & sorcery flick, to be sure. And, it's got that dark edge. Heck, the main character was the victim of sorcery, drawn out of his mother's womb before he was born and transported to the womb of a cow, from which the child was birthed! Children are sacrificed in this film!
The title of the film could easily be "The Beastmaster - A Story of the Hyborian Age". I would set it in the unknown regions east of the Vilayet, in the Zarehaana Steppes, or maybe in the northern part of the Wuhuan Desert. The Jun, who are the main bad guys in the film, could easily be a tribe of Hyrkanian nomads.
I would add this film to my list of Hyborian Age (and Thurian Age) films.
Conan The Barbarian (1982) Conan The Destroyer Red Sonja
The Beastmaster Kull The Conqueror
Conan The Barbarian (2011)

Ha! I just found this on IMDB.com.
It also says there that the film is loosely based on Andre Norton's novel, The Beastmaster.

Like Rip Torn. Bad casting for the sorcerer bad guy.

Like Rip Torn. Bad casting for the sorcerer bad guy. I thought he was pretty cool. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I haven't watched this since the 90's. It was always on TBS (The Beastmaster Station) or HBO, (Hey Beastmaster's On). *Stolen from Wikipedia*
I'll have to give it a watch and see if I can treat it as a Hyborian Age film.

This along with Conan the Barbarian (duh) and Fulci's Conquest are my favourite 80's sword & sorcery movies. Weird bat people, hot witch women with monster faces, a baby being teleported from his mother's womb into a cow, that cool eye ring, Rip Torn's nose and Tanya Roberts in very cold water. So much stuff to love.

The Beastmaster is on Amazon Prime Video now. I was just watching it last night; it holds up pretty well. It definitely fits in the Hyborian age. Conan and Dar should team up. It could be epic. 🙂

I've never thought about placing Beastmaster in the Hyborian Age but I think it could make an interesting crossover. I imagine Conan could get the better of Dar in a fight but Dar's ferrets could bite Conan in the nuts so I would consider it a draw.
I'm a big fan of the first Beastmaster, I put it in the top 3 80's S&S flicks along with the two Conan flicks. Don't get me wrong Beastmaster is not a cinematic masterpiece, it's goofy as hell in some parts (mostly the costumes, the disturbingly attired princeling and the bondage suit creatures in the temple being standouts) but excellent in others and very entertaining (and yes 80's Tanya Roberts elevates everything by several points). I like Rip Torn as Maax too, I thought he hammed it up and made it fun.

Oh, Conan would wipe the floor with Dar, no question about it.
So...where would you set Beastmaster in the Hyborian Age? East of the Vilayet, like I did? Some place else?
