Going back into office a few days a week now, and since audiobooks are driving activity for me, I had some Audible credits built up.
Right now enjoying two books that I selected for Halloween season:
Chuck Wendig - Wanderers
Lots of comparisons to Stephen King's The Stand, which seems pretty apt so far. A bunch of people begin "sleepwalking" in same direction and no one knows why or how. As nation tries to make sense of it, more strange behaviors crop up in the group.
This book has a good dose of "medical mystery thriller" in it - one main POV character is CDC investigator.
Like Stephen King, starting to realize the real monsters aren't the sleepwalkers but people reacting badly to it. Also reminds me of Michael Chrichton thrillers... starts like medical mystery but starting to exhibit some... supernatural? superhero? type characteristics. Good stuff. Not quite horror (although there are a few bloody moments) but good scifi/horror/thriller story set in modern US.
The audiobook is good too; they have different narrators that match up w/ the main POV characters, which is a nice contrast.
Can't vouch for the ending; only about 1/3 of way through, but really enjoying it so far.
Joe Hill - Full Throttle
Short story & novella compilation by Joe Hill. Only one story in, but it moved quickly; clear beginning, middle & end, fast prose, good dialogue. The opening story is about a biker gang pursued by a relentless truck a la Duel.
Definitely more horror than Wanderers. One biker goes off cliff and Joe Hill describes his shins sticking out of his calves when he hits ground below, so bloody out of the gate.
Another thing I really liked: the forward is long but interesting story about growing up as Stephen King's son, and working on the Creepshow movie. For a guy w/ a 80's childhood, fascinating hearing some "behind the scenes" stuff.
Anybody got other good Halloween reads? Horror, sure, but anything that's well-written and you don't know what the outcome will be is welcome by me.
Mick.
