I like Deuce's idea about SG being a sorcerer from a bygone era. That stokes the pastiche idea furnace. Maybe he's an outer thing that took human form sort of like Khosatral Khel. I can dig it!
Shuma-Gorath may have been the Thulsa Doom of the Pre-Thurian age

Maybe Shuma-Gorath is a holiday celebrated by vile necromancers. When you succeed in the annual Shuma-Gorath feat of strength, they put your name down in the book of Shuma-Gorath.

I've heard occultists say this ritual breifly re-emerged in the 1990's with it's true eldritch nature hidden under the innocuous name of "Festivus".

They should bring back the original octopus head monster Bloodstone's old foe Ulluxyl, for even more potent Marvel/REH goulash.

I would have thought Funcom/Cabinet/Malmberg , whoever is looking after REH now , would be happy to do some sort of deal to use the name after all this time. It would keep REH in the news as they don't seem to be doing bugger all else at present LOL.

You'd think...Marvel movies are beginning to come back to their pre-Endgame prominence plus Spidey struck a nerve and launched it into the stratosphere. So what movie is following up on that? Hey, the Dr. Strange film! I did notice they kept the name out of the What If? series where he (it) first showed up. Anyone want to tweet Fred about this one if this is the case or not? Keeping an obscure name out of what promises to be one of the biggest pictures of the year, which is coming out from the same company YOU'RE DOING CONAN WITH NOW?!? Did they give Netflix the rights to stuff like that as well on Conan to have them possibly sit on it without doing anything? Edit: Fred may be off the hook (or Kevin may have found a clever way around it): www.cbr.com/doctor-strange-2-mcu-gargantos-clear-look/

Me again. I dug out my old Sub Mariner Masterworks and checked out #13 which up until now was the only appearance of Gargantos. The character appears for...four pages and one panel! Shuma-Gorath appeared in at least 20 issues and mentioned in more, most of them related to Dr. Strange.
My new supposition: Kevin didn't ask, they just used what they had that looked like Shuma Gorath and went with that to avoid any (Obi-Wan speak) entanglements. Now if you as a viewer want to THINK it's Shuma Gorath, just under another name...hey, that's on you. We clearly say it's Gargantos!
