I honestly do think that Malmberg and asociates are going to go through the books of talent that were approached for Conan 2011 and hire some of them to direct episodes of this new series. That means Neil Marshall, M J Basset (of Solomon Kane fame), and probably the cream of the crop of DeKnight's Spartacus tv series. This could be a major opportunity to get genuine Hollywood talent who are avid fans of Conan behind the camera to bring their own style to the show. Someone block Paul W S Anderson's telephone number!

Agreed. Using Lovecraft's Mythos directly in the Conan yarns was something REH himself consciously avoided. The only one he even alluded to in the Conan yarns was Tsathoggua and he was a shared creation between the Three Musketeers of Weird Tales. Only Deuce, Keith, yourself and a few other dedicated REH scholars know the full complexities thereof. The first two Alien films are a good analogy. The creator's of the Alien franchise were consciously influenced by the old pulp yarns esp Clark Ashton Smith. Compare for instance aspects of Alien with Smith's Vaults of Yoh-Vombis, which had its own brand of face-huggers. Ridley Scott's team did a fantastic job of evoking the kind of alien atmospheric effects created by Smith with his prose in Yoh-Vombis. If only netflix would do a CAS anthology series It's too early to speculate but I hope Netflix gets directors and showrunners who can understand the varied nature of individual Conan stories and the power Of REH's writing, The Tower of the Elephant and The Frost Giant's Daughter are very short stories but in those little packages you get world building, action/adventure and cosmic wonder and weirdness. If they can manage to pack that kind of viewer experience in an hour or so episode they will knock it out of the park. More on CAS influence on Alien/Aliens:

He was somewhat hampered with Solomon Kane by the studio's insistence on an origin story based rewrite. His first script was much more Howardian I believe. Long time ago now but he had a brief interchange with Michael Moorcock on his message board about the possibility of directing an Elric movie back when that was under option by Universal.

Yes Fredrik said at Howard Days in '18 when they announced all the "upcoming"!!! projects they had been in contact with MJ presumably about Kane at that time.

Check out the new Barbarians series on Netflix. In a way, REH wrote Conan as a "historical" character, perhaps filming should be approached in the same way?

Looks like it's following a similar aesthetic to Ridley Scott's Gladiator (recall the Romans Vs Huns at the start of the film) or the first class 'Centurion' from Neil Marshall (which featured the Picts in Cimmerian-style colder environments.) I generally hold as a yardstick that any fantasy series should be 'grounded' and treated as a historical drama with creatures.

So with discussing Marshall and Bassett for Netflix, what other Directors do we know that are a possibility based on their 'involvement' in trying to direct Conan 2011? Anyone know of other film directors that Lionsgate talked to (aside from Brett Ratner) before settling on Marcus Nispel?

This show has fueld my hope that Conan CAN be done with total respect of REH's vision, even with Netflix that does go by some sjw bullcrap standard from time to time. So, I started to be a bit more optimistic about it 😎 Find a good and worthy director that will enter in this project with his soul, and we could finaly get real Conan of Cimmeria, the way his creator intended him to be. Masive, muscular, intimidating and strong figure for the main role (he has to be properly build, not just good actor - or else any one can do it), complecs characters, good developed story and direction, R rated and brutal product can be achived, and without pc agendas... By Crom, this could be a pleasent surprise for us all. PS I volunteer to be Nestor Gunderman ✌️😁

I would be more than happy for Mel Gibson to direct some Conan. Florian Munteanu could possibly be a fit for Conan. Whether his acting capabilities are right for it could be questionable.

I think Tom Hardy would be a good fit for Conan. At the beginning of Mad Max Fury Road he looks like Conan when he has long hair. And to boot, he is a very capable actor and he has a masculine voice.

Some good suggestions coming forth, but got to disagree with the idea of Hardy as Conan; even with 2 inch lifts in his shoes, he still wouldn't be even 6 foot tall, being 5'9". Our Cimmerian needs to be at least 6 foot 2 minimum, and the director (unlike Marcus Nispel) needs to be able to use that. I say the latter because Jason Momoa is a huge guy, about 6'5", but was there a single shot in Conan 2011 where he towered over the rest of the cast? Exactly. Mel Gibson to direct? First class idea! Couldn't think of anyone better. Again, treat the show as a historical grounded drama, rather than, as Peter Jackson put it 'people throwing visual effects at each other.'

Its should be more realistic with supernatural elements, grounded in historical and less fantasy, as Howard did create it. And I always dreamed of Gibson in charge when it comes to Conan. That would be something powerfull. Or even Refn or MC Tiernan. Those people know their job Well. As far as Hardy goes, I cant see him in the role. Even tho Nolan did a great job making him look tall and hulky in The Dark Knight Rises, we need some fresh meat here, lesser known or unknown actor that looks barbaric and raw. Even if his acting abilities isnt Shakespearian, under right and galant lead of worthy and good director, it would be great in the end.

The visceral violence and energy of Gibson's Apocalypto is a great benchmark on how I would envision a Conan film. The Hyborian Age is the perfect environment for a talented director and production team to unleash their creativity on.
