Of course, I was aware of the Conan the Barbarian character already, having already been exposed to the early 1980s Schwarzenegger movies, plus the early 90s animated series. But ironically, it was something totally NON-Howard related and COMPLETELY INFERIOR IN EVERY WAY that ultimately drove me to start pursuing the yarns of Conan, Kull, and other R.E.H. characters seriously. That was the late 1990s television series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Yes, that's right, it was that that shallow, cheesy, teen-angst-cliché-ridden piece of pap that lead me seriously to the great Mr. Howard's writings. Having once plucked up the nerve to pick up a book on the series' inspirations, I read of its rather obvious debts to the Cthulhu Mythos of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, and through those stories, I began to read Robert Howard's works, seeing as how they were peripherally related to Lovecraft's. So while Buffy, for me, has thankfully long since been cast into the eternal void, Howard and Lovecraft are still very much alive for me.
