Star Trek: Greek Tragedy
A Star Trek Drama in three Acts
The Starship Enterprise voyages to a distant planet named Salson. There they hope to engage in a cultural exhange and discover if the citizens of the planet express any desire for joining the federation. The mission is considered to be strictly routine
Act one
James T Kirk enters the bridge of the Starship Enterprise
Mr. Spock, tell me how long before we make our scheduled landing on Salson?
Spock. We are just now entering their orbit Captain, landing will occur immediately after we obtain the necessary permission.
Kirk. Good, proceed Mr Spock
Uhura. Captain, we are receiving a comunication from Salson
Kirk. Go to visual Please.
A severe looking official appears on the visual screen
Official, I am President Ohirran of the planet Salson, I welcome you Enterprise. However, before you land we have a small problem that I need to address with your Captain. I am providing co-ordinates for your transport to our planet. This is a small matter that will be quickly resolved after a few words with your Commander. Please reply Enterprise.
Kirk. this is Captain Kirk, commander of the Enterprise. What is the nature of this meeting you wish for me to attend. I was not made aware of this previously.
Ohirran. It is a matter of cultural acclimation that I wish to pass on to you in order to avoid any possible difficulties your crew might potentially encounter during what I hope will be a very pleasant visit. We are a friendly people but some of our customs seem rather bizarre to outsiders, and we wish to avoid any unnecessary episodes of culture clash. This is a minor affair but we deem it rather important all the same.
Kirk. Very well, our records validate your cultural oddities and therefore I shall come down and discuss whatever demands EACH of us feel are appropriate.
Ohirran Excellent Captain, we are expecting you then, and again, welcome to Salson.
Kirk, accompanied by McCoy and three security personnel, proceeds to the transporter room.
Enter Kirk and his companions. The scene is a lavishly designed quarters on Salson. Ohirran and several well dressed officials are waiting.
Ohirran. You must be Captain Kirk?
Kirk. Yes, I am pleased to make your acquaintance Sir.
Ohirran makes an odd signal with his hand and twenty heavily armed men enter to the rear of Kirk and his men.
Kirk. what is the meaning of this?
Ohirran. Seize them, take away their weapons and communicators at once. Forgive me Captain but I will explain momentarily.
Kirk. Do not resist, we wouldn't have a chance. Ohirran, I hold you responisble for this outrage.
McCoy. this conduct is damned disgraceful. You people have no idea what you are getting yourself into. The federation will not stand for this nonsense Ohirran or whomever you claim you are.
Ohirran yes, yes but you are in no position to do anything gentlemen. You may now consider yourselves hostages of the Salson government. Your friends shall be taken to their quarters but I will allow you Kirk to remain behind to discuss the situation further. I apologize Captain but I must be certain of your absolute co-operation. You see, these are very serious times for our planet.
Kirk is left behind under heavy guard.
Ohirran Please sit down Captain and you shall have your explanation.
Kirk. It had better be a good one Oharran, kidnapping the Captain of a Federation Starship is no minor offense.
Ohirran Relax Captain, we mean you no harm. I shall get right to the point at once. We are at war Captain and our opponent is very aggressive and quite a bit stronger than us I fear. We must have your starship's assistance in order to have a fighting chance against these fiends. I apologize again for the unfortunate circumstances I have forced you into. However, I know you are prevented by your charter to interfere with the affairs of the planets you travel to. Thus we have taken you and your crewmen hostage.
Ohirran offers the Captain a drink. Kirk refuses.
Kirk. we might have been able to offer you protection from your enemies. You should have put in a proper request and we could have talked about this like civilized men.
Ohirran. the key word you mentioned is might. Our survival as a race depends on your help. We cannot afford to request anything, we must have the Enterprise. An attack is imminent. We have only a few peaceful spacecraft. They have a fleet and we are doomed unless the Enterprise is ours. Your ship is powerful enough to stand them off. Their weapons are rather crude and I seriously doubt they can do significant damage to your ship. Of course I will glady return you to your ship once the crisis is past. Have no doubts of that Captain. However, Desperate situations call for desperate measures.
Kirk. In the meanwhile I remain a prisoner, you must understand how important it is that a ship's captain is present during a battle? Besides I prefer to believe most battles can be avoided with proper negotiation. Common ground is easy to find when war looms.
Ohirran True and well said, but the federation does not send a ship like the Enterprise into space without a rather large number of outstanding officers aboard. Any number of which are perfectly capable of fighting off a fleet such as the Atarrans shall bring. That is our reason for keeping you here.
As for making peace, I agree, unfortunately the Atarrans will have none of it.
Kirk I am not familiar with these Atarrans, tell me more.
Ohirran it is a sad tale to be truthful. A thousand years ago we had a great rebellion here on Salson. The rebellion was put down but several ships escaped and colonized a distant planet. These are the Atarrans. In their minds I'm afraid they feel they have a duty to conquer the mother planet. A thousand years has changed nothing where they are concerned. Now they are stronger than us and more determined than ever.
Kirk An interesting tale, but you should know I have very little trust in you at the moment. However, please continue.
Ohirran There has been a some very limited amount of visitation between our peoples. We sent spies there and now we know that an attack has been in the planning for decades. The time for that attack is now.
Kirk what was the reason for the rebellion in the first place.
Ohirran Initially the Atarrans were in the right. Salson was ruled for hundreds of years by a very brutal dictatorship. Their word was law. The Atarrans, a very strong minded folk, rose up and the resulting war lasted a decade and was bitterly contested to be sure. The thing is, now Salson has a democratic form of government and its been this way for a hundred and fifty years. We are a mostly peaceful people and harmony has been our good fortune for as long as any can recall. The Atarrans on the other hand have created a society much like the one they fought so hard against. They are ruled by a harsh dictator who has the complete support of the military and the police. In some ways they are worse off than they were on Salson all those years ago. They claim this is due to the harsh conditions they endure on Atar which is not an especially hospitable planet to be sure. Yet, despite all they have thrived and now wish to expand their empire to their former homeworld.
Kirk empire?
Ohirran Yes, they have already taken domination over three or four planet that are near to Atar. They have a massive military force. Fortunately, they are not technological geniuses. They have nothing to compare with the enterprise.
Kirk What you have done will surely put you at odds with the Federation. They might have been your most powerful ally. Now, you may be in worse trouble than you realize. Its not to late to reconsider your tenuous position my friend.
Ohirran, raising his voice. There is no time for politicians to argue over the matter. The attack could come any minute now. We needed a guarantee that your ship would be at our disposal in regards to defense. Yes, what we have done is the act of a desperate people but these are desperate times. The Atarrans would destroy or enslave all of us and do so joyfully. We have come so far, it would be a crime agains humanity for it all to be blown to bits now. But enough, I must rest, then consult further with my advisors. I appreciate your patience in this matter Captain. It must be difficult for you but attempt to understand our position.
A beautiful girl enters
Ohirran This is my daughter Gidarri, she will see to your needs. You will find her the perfect hostess.
Kirk and the girl exit along with Kirk's guards.
the scene, Kirk's quarters
Enter Gidarri I hope you are comfortable Captain. I regret terribly that you have not come during happier times. These are dark days indeed.
Kirk I cannot be comfortable until I am back on my ship but I do not blame you for this situation. Your father is very paranoid and perhaps with good reason. There remains much I would like to know.
Gidarri yes, dear Captain. We have lived these last few months in stark terror. The news of your arrival was like a godsend. However, we were informed that federation starships are forbidden to interfere in the affairs of alien worlds. Then, some of the elders raised the plan that brought you to this sad state. I am sorry, but we acted out of sheer terror. Please try to understand, in truth we are a gentle people.
Kirk I would like to believe anything coming from such a lovely person as yourself. A man made of iron would melt after looking into your eyes. Like I said, I don't blame you. However, I belong on my ship and I should be making the decisions as to its activity. Perhaps your father means well but his methods are highly irregular. However, again I place no blame on you Gidarri.
Gidarri He has only the best interests of his people at heart. As a leader yourself, perhaps you can find some empathy in your heart.
She gives him wine and he drinks.
Kirk Would it be possible for Dr McCoy to be brought here. I am worried about my men and it would be nice to have one of my own kind to talk with. I am having a difficult time of it. I cannot reconcile all that I have been witness to. I enjoy your company Gidarri but can I see McCoy please?
Gidarri I see no reason why you shouldn't be visited by this man. I doubt he can stay for long but I will do what I can.
Kirk I am more thankful than you know.
exit Gidarri
enter McCoy.
Jim, its good to see you are alright. We have been treated well but I am getting irritated at being a prisoner. Is there nothing we can do.
Kirk. Do you have any news Bones?
McCoy. Well, one of our gents tried to escape but they shot him with a paralysis gun of some kind. He was in terrible pain for a few minutes but he has recovered completely. It wasn't an experience that he would care to repeat however. Otherwise, we have no right to complain. The food is good and the booze is better.
Kirk I'm glad to hear it goes well. Perhaps they would let us return to the ship if I vowed to lead the enterprise in combat against these Atarrans they fear so much. On the other hand they would likely refuse, having us here as hostages seems to be the insurance they need to get their way. Their cause does not seem to be such a unreasonable one. Still, I don't wish to involve the federation in a war they know nothing about. I don't feel these people are such bad characters. The girl Gidarri has treated me far better than any prisoner could expect. She seems to be a lady of impressive character and intelligence.
McCoy A girl huh, send a few down for the rest of us if you would. This place is boring the hell out of me. What I wouldn't give for a broken leg to mend. Or a nice case of Venusian flu to attend to.
Kirk Maybe they could use your help. I will make inquiries.
McCoy I hear these people will be obliterated if we don't help them. I agree with you entirely on one point. They don't seem like such a bad lot despite what they have done.
Kirk it seems that way. They are vague about the strength of these Atarrans. I'm worried about the enterprise.
McCoy Of course Jim, thats your job. But lets give Spock some credit, he should be able to handle whatever those Atarrans throw at him.
Kirk yes, but a captain's place is on the bridge, especially in time of battle. Still, should they return me to the enterprise how do they know I won't simply leave the galaxy at the first sign of the Atarrans. I can't deny I have developed a fondness for these people, even old Ohirran.
McCoy and especially the girl?
Kirk, smiling and especially the girl. It is difficult to envision going away and leaving her to a life of slavery. She is just so.
McCoy beautiful?
Kirk laughs Bones, you know me to well you old pirate. I was about to say exceptional.
McCoy Boys will be boys, even exceptional ones.
the guards come for McCoy
Kirk Keep your chin up bones. I will think of some solution to this mess.
McCoy of course you will, you are the captain and you must.
end act one
Act two
On the bridge of the enterprise
Chekhov Surely something has gone amiss Mr Spock. The Captain would have contacted us long before now and he does not respond to our communications
Spock Yes Ensign, you voice the obvious. The Captain has undoubtedly encountered some unforseen difficulties. The question concerns the nature of these difficulties.
Chekhov Then we should send another landing party to assess the situation. should we not Sir?
Spock It would be the logical thing to do but I'm afraid whatever action we take must be delayed for the moment.
Chekhov, growing agitated But Mr Spock, what possible reason could we have for not investigating matters on Salson in regards to the Captain. Time may be of the essence.
Spock Unfortunately we have far greater issues at the moment. Remember, our first obligation is to the ship and the crew aboard. My sensors have detected a rather large fleet of heavily armed warhips entering the area. I calculate they will arrive within a few minutes. I do not know for certain where they originated or what their intentions might be, but give the order to put the ship on highest alert and man the battle stations immediately.
Chekhov At once Sir.
a half hour later
Chekhov They seem to be just sitting there Mr Spock, they do not respond to our hailing them. What could they possibly want?
Spock It could be that they are surprised to find us here and are uncertain as to what course they are going to take. I theorize that they came here to attack the planet Salson for some unknown reason. Possibly the disappearance of the Captain is somehow related to the arrival of this alien fleet. It is a fascinating development in what should have been a rather routine mission.
Chekhov What course of action to you propose Mr Spock?
Spock, pausing We shall also wait. However, continue to hail the alien fleet on all frequencies and continue attempting to contact the Captain. Maintain highest alert and remain at battle stations. I will attempt to gather more data.
Chekhov They are just waiting out there like circling vultures. Perhaps we should make the first move?
Spock I have done a complete analysis of their capibilities. Their weapons are crude but effective. I believe our chances of survival in terms of direct conflict are only about twelve percent. And consider that I might have over emphasized the ability of the Enterprise's crew while I computed my analysis.
Chekhov, his face growing red I assure you Mr Spock, the crew of the Enterprise is the best the federation has. Perhaps if the Captain were here. pauses
Spock you are dismissed Ensign, I find our current situation most interesting and wish to consider it more thoroughly, without your additional input. Thank you, you may return to your post.
Exit Chekov quickly
The scene, Captain Kirk's quarters on Salson, several days have passed
Gidarri enters
I trust you are well Captain
Kirk I am miserable Gidarri
Gidarri Worried about your ship I suppose? I am also worried, about very many things. Let us not allow our troubles to spoil our visit. I find them most interesting.
Kirk I will try Gidarri. I enjoy your company as well but of course, my place is up there. I have the oddest feeling that all is not well, that perhaps my ship is in danger. My instincts about such things have often proved correct in the past.
Gidarri I am sure you are merely restless. Let us talk, perhaps a simple exchange of words may provide distraction for you. It, it is distressing for me to see you so agitated and unhappy Kirk. My time spent with you has given me the impression that you care deeply for the welfare of your crew and fate of your command. This is a very noble trait, and I admire you all the more for it.
Kirk Thank you. It would mean a great deal to me if you could give me some news as to what has transpired outside my lavish prison.
Gidarri I am forbidden to speak of such things. Boskak has warned me rather severely.
Kirk Boskak, who is he, this is the first time you have spoken of him.
Gidarri My brother, he is very powerful and perhaps rather obstinate. He can also be capable of cruelty, even to me.
Kirk Ohirran allows this?
Gidarri Boskak intimidates even my father I'm afraid. He has influential friends who would like nothing better than to raise Boskak to the level of a tyrant of sorts. His ways are strange to me, I confess that I hardly understand him at all.
Kirk I understood that Selson's society is a very free and democratic one.
Gidarri It has been but changes are on the way. Boskak has new ideas that appeal to certain members of the elite and he is a master of manipulation.
Kirk He is the defacto head of the government?
Gidarri I believe he is, though not quite completely. There are those that dislike him. The ordinary citizens prefer my father and the military is essentially divided. I am afraid there is much uncertainty. And this dreadful situation with the Atarrans is not helping matters. Boskak is the one who hatched this scheme involving the enterprise. If it succeeds who knows how powerful he will become. I think he will declare himself emperor. Yet if his plan does not succeed, we perish.
Gidarri begins sobbing, Kirk takes her hand. She puts her head on his shoulder.
Kirk There is more isnt there?
Gidarri yes, the Atarran fleet has arrived. As yet they have taken no action. They did not expect to find the planet defended by a federation Starship. They probably anticipated a relatively easy conquest but now they hesitate uncertain. Boskak is negotiating with them and he has also been in communication with your Mr Spock. However, he tells me nothing. Everything I know I hear from Ohirron who is on the verge of nervous exhaustion. He is no longer a young man. These troubles weary him more than most suspect.
Kirk puts his arm around the girl and lightly kisses her cheek.
Kirk If somehow I could get back to my ship I feel certain that I could find a solution to this mess. These Atarrans appear to be very determined to wage war. They must be a very aggressive race.
Gidarri I am afraid you have been deceived dear Kirk. I cannot continue to play my pathetic role in this dreadful parody. I have grown increasinly toubled even as I have grown to respect you more and more. Boskak is responsible for all of this. The Atarrans have actually been very friendly for the last few years. Then my brother paid them a visit and fell in love with the young wife of an Atarran prince. He stole her here to Salson and refuses to give her back. She is a foolish young girl but very beautiful indeed. Her name is Helene, Boskak's arrogance and assumption of power has made a mess of things. Now the Atarrans have come to take the girl back or destroy us all. The sad thing is, I suspect they feel they have no choice in the matter, my brother has insulted them greatly. The fact they have not already attacked us proves that they prefer a more peaceful solution to this disasterous folly. And of all persons. we have Boskak doing our negotiantions for us. What insanity!
Kirk It all begins to make sense to me now. Thank you Gidarri. I am convinced more than ever that I could negotiate a peace if I could only return to my command. This entire situation reminds me of an ancient tale from my home planet's mythology. That tale ended horribly I'm afraid.
Gidarri Boskak will never let you go. He feels your captivity is the key to controlling the enterprise.
Kirk Well, I admit he may be right in some respect. but still he is going about this entirely the wrong way. Blackmail is a very sordid means to an end. I cannot be a part in it. It goes against everything I believe in and everything the Federation stands for. I must be true to myself Gidarri, despite all.
Gidarri Boskak is very obstinate and places complete confidence in his decisions, no matter how dreadful they appear to others. He arrogantly defies the straight forward logic that has served our race so well. Still, he has allies, powerful allies. Ohirron grows more concerned with each passing day.
Kirk I see only one course of action, it is up to you Gidarri. If you know where they took my communicator and weapons you must bring them to me if at all possible.
Gidarri I know where they are and I will help you noble Kirk. However, I beg of you to not harm anyone, even Boskak. After all, he is still my brother.
Kirk The phaser is merely a precaution, and it can be set to stun only. What I really need is my communicator so that I can contact my first officer and inform him about the true nature of this affair.
Enter Ohirron, Boskak, and the Captain of the guard.
End of act two
Act three
The scene is the same as the end of act two
Boskak glances at his sister with disapproval then turns to the Captain.
I have ordered your devices removed Captain. I have one of your communicators. I wish for you to hail your first officer Mr Spock and order him to move at once against the Atarran invaders. He is a most stubborn fellow, a Vulcan I believe. I feel confident that you, Dear Captain, value your life and those of your companions much more highly than Mr Spock does.
Kirk Spock is a fine officer, he will do what he must do to protect the ship above all else. Taking on a fleet of alien warships that he knows little about is what he would call an Illogical action of the highest order.
Boskak
You do no seem to appreciate our situation. These Atarran barbarians will destroy Salson and enslave the survivors, assuming there are any. We have tried to negotiate with them but they will not listen to reason. Their hatred of our people goes back a thousand years and it is so deep rooted at the present that they have become totally irrational. Their destruction would appear to be the only answer to our plight. We must have a means to subdue the Atarrans or our difficulties may be unending. They are a pathetic, weak minded race and jealous of our obvious superiority. We drove them out due to their own aggressive actions all those years ago. We must establish ourselves as their masters if any progress is ever to be achieved in this galaxy.
Kirk pauses and seems to be lost for the moment in deep thought
Kirk Very well, give me the communicator and I will order the Enterprise into battle and then I will wait here with you for word of our victory.
Boskak, smiling. Very good captain, I knew one of your rank would finally come around to reason.
He hands Kirk the communicator and Kirk hails his ship
Spock Mr Spock, acting commander of the Starship Enterprise.
Kirk spock, this is Captain Kirk. I and the rest of the landing party are fine. I am giving you a direct order, listen carefully.
Spock Yes Captain, please continue.
Kirk you must leave this area immediately. Under no circumstances will you engage the Atarran fleet unless attacked directly. Exit the area and contact Federation command for further instructions. These are direct orders. I will not be able to return to the ship at the moment. Do not concern yourself with the landing party, we must not be considered relevant to your actions at this time. Protect the Enterprise and its crew.
Boskak strikes the communicator from the Captain's hand and Kirk delivers a return blow that knocks Boskak off his feet. Kirk attempts to retreive Boskak's sidearm but the Captain of the Guard renders Kirk helpless with a paralysis gun.
Kirk speaks with difficulty, his body racked with pain
Kirk I will not, cannot, order my ship into battle on behalf of your sordid affair with another man's wife. If the Attarrans attack it falls on your head Boskak. You have put your lust and pride before the safety of your entire race. Come to your senses before it is to late and return the girl. Spock will obey my orders to the letter, the Enterprise will not aid you in any way. All you have accomplished is adding the wrath of the Federation to your list of worries.
Boskak I am no fool. The Enterprise will return even if I kill you which I shall. We still have your companions to bargain with.
Ohirron The game is up Boskak, your idiotic scheme has backfired as I knew it would. I should have spoken up sooner but I am hardly immune to your raging moods. I am at blame as much as you. Let us release our prisoners and prepare to combat the Atarrans by ourselves if we must. Now is the time for reason. Your pride and ambition has led us to the brink of utter disaster. Enough!
for several minutes Boskak and Oharron engage in a very heated debate. Kirk recovers sufficently to rise to his feet. Desperate, he prepares to launch himself at Boskak.
Boskak Now you die you foolish Federation tool.
Boskak aims his weapon at Kirk.
Ohirron No, I will not allow it Boskak!
there is a shot
Gidarri You have shot our father! she screams as Ohirron lies badly wounded.
Boskak The old fool should not have stepped between me and the Captain. This is all your fault Gidarri, you are a traitor You alone could have informed the Captain of the true cause of this Atarran aggression. I suspect you are in love with this alien Captain. That is unacceptable, our race is not to be corrupted in this manner.
Boskak points his weapon at his sister who weeps beside the fallen Ohirron
Ohirron Stop him, he is mad.
The Captain of the guard fires with his paralysis gun set on full power. Boskak falls dead instantly.
Captain of the Guard I had to do it, his mind had become unhinged. He would have killed lady Gidarri for no reason. No one was safe in his presence anymore. Assassins among our own people would have killed him anyway eventually, and sooner rather than later.
Kirk Rest easy soldier. You only did your duty and no fault lies with you. He was the architect of his own destruction. Quickly now, go and fetch Dr McCoy before it is to late for Ohirron.
The Captain of the guard exits hurriedly.
Ohirron Listen to me my child. You must release the Captain and the girl Helene at once. Send her back to her people with a very profound apology. Tell them Boskak is dead and deservedly so. Make peace with them, they are of our on kind after all. Take care of my people, they are so dear to me.
McCoy enters and examines Ohirron
McCoy He's dead Jim.
the scene shifts to an impressive state funeral for Ohirron
Orlick, an Atarran ambassador Thank you Captain Kirk for what you did here. I was certainly happy we did not have to make war on a federation starship. I fear the outcome would have not been desirable for any of us.
Kirk you are most likely correct Mr Orlick. Now please excuse me while I say my goodbyes to my friends from Salson.
Orlick Of course Captain, and we shall look forward to your visit to our planet where you can tell me more of the benifits of joining your powerful federation.
Kirk I also look forward to that meeting, goodbye Sir.
Kirk finds Gidarri, her eyes wet from tears.
Gidarri Ohirron was a great leader, I hope I can be half as steadfast as he. I have the support of my people. They seem so relieved.
Kirk I wish it could have worked out differently. Ohirron died the death of a hero, he saved my life and I will always be grateful. And I am equally grateful to you Gidarri. I was blessed to have your friendship in my life, even if for a little while.
Gidarri Can't you stay a little longer.
Kirk My duties prevent it. However, If I ever get a chance to visit I shall. I'm afraid that is the best promise that any Starship Captain can afford to make. We are no longer the masters of our own fate I am afraid.
Gidarri Ah yes, the Enterprise is your true love. It is to my sorrow that I care so much for a man that is far from ordinary. I understand noble captain. but someday you will need more than a machine to soothe your heart. I hope for a better future for you my fair Captain.
They say goodbye and embrace for the last time.
Aboard the Enterprise.
Scotty Captain, it is a delight to see you back and fit. We had begun to frett a good deal over what had become of the lot of you.
Kirk It is good to be back Mr Scott. I did quite a bit of fretting myself you can be sure. How is the ship, I trust all is well.
Scott Fit as a fiddle Captain, and chomping at the bit.
Spock gives Scotty a look of complete puzzlement. Spock It might be better Mr Scott if we continue to speak a comnon language during duty hours.
Scott I quite understand, you are indeed the common fellow Mr Spock.
Exit Scott smiling
Spock I welcome you back to the bridge Captain. Your version of recent events is fascinating. I still don't quite understand how you so easily convinced the young lady to confide in you so completely.
Kirk It was all thanks to training I received at the Starfleet Academy, strictly off campus tho I will admit.
Sulu what is the course Captain.
Kirk put in for the planet Atar. At accelerated speed if you would. I need activity, distraction. I have to much on my mind to suffer delay Mr Sulu. I need action, and relief from introspection.
Sulu aye aye captain
curtain falls slowly.
