In my opinion, they don’t even need an artist. These books are not sold on shelves. When we order them, it’s for the content, not the cover. A nice classy cover with just the title, Foundation logo and Howard’s name, that would be ok with me. I keep the dust jackets hidden anyway.
Btw, I am the crazy guy who bought Early El Borak…! I just had to complete the collection!

LoL! Well, when you are completing your collection you just have to figure you'll pay through the nose for at least one of the books! It always works that way!

Missed out on Tales of Weird Menace and Steve Harrison's Casebook on eBay. The former went for $356 and the latter for $311. Prices are crazy and there were several people bidding on them! Just nuts!

I got a copy of Steve Harrison's Casebook. So now I just need Adventures in Science Fantasy, Tales of Weird Menace, and Spicy Tales. I wouldn't mind Last of the Trunk but I'm not interested in paying big money for that one.
Adventures in Science Fantasy actually popped up on ebay for $250 for about an hour (at 5am!). I missed it, being someone who sleeps past that time of the morning! Kind of bummed but it is what it is.

Good to know, but I'm hoping to get the first editions. The cover art on the second editions is really bad, IMHO, whereas the first editions are beautiful.

Personally the art doesn't bother me , it's the contents of the book. Especially with the possibility of some additional stuff in the Ultimate Editions like the first Letters book. More important to a poor pensioner though , , is that the softcover will be about a quarter of the price without the shipping cost from the US to the UK !!!

I understand but I want the whole package. And I have a graphic arts background so the art is actually very important to me. It's one reason I've got the Wandering Star Conan books heading my way.
I can see getting the Ultimate Editions for things like the Letters and Poems (and probably removing the terrible dust jackets and/or replacing them). Soft cover is another option for those. But for the stories, I want the best on my shelf.
Side note: I picked up a copy of the REH Foundation's A Rhyme of Salem Town and Other Poems for only $55! I really haven't read a lot of Howard's poetry so I'm enjoying reading through the book.

Pugbuddy, I understand art enjoyment is subjective, but having seen the upcoming cover artwork for the next several ultimate editions, I hope you'll be as amazed with them as we are. Absolutely beautiful work! Mark Wheatley is killing it! Hopefully he'll produce copies of them for individual sale.

Well, I got sniped on a bunch of books on ebay, which really miffs me. I hate "private bidders" and sniping! But I did get a copy of Last of the Trunk though, which surprised me.
Bulbous, I just don't care for Mr. Wheatley's art style, I'm afraid. I'll say that the 2nd and 3rd covers for the Collected letters books are better than the first, but I (very) much prefer the covers to the first editions. That doesn't mean I won't pick up a few of the Ultimate Editions but I plan to complete my collection of 1st editions.

No problem, Pugbuddy. As I said, enjoyment of art is subjective. Also, collecting 1st editions can be very enjoyable, and lucrative, as you've discovered trying to buy them.
Be aware that some of these ultimate editions will have important differences from the 1st editions. Most of the collections of Howard's fiction will be relatively unchanged, as so far we're only checking the stories against any newly found drafts from Glenn Lord's typescript collection, looking for any changes that were made by pulp editors from Howard's original writings, and going back to Howard's versions where we only had the pulp publications before.
However, the Letters books will have new letters found since the 1st editions were done along with a photo section, and beginning in the 2nd volume, all of the drafts of Howard's letters to Lovecraft will be included, some for the first time ever. The 3 upcoming volumes of Howard's poetry will now have *every* poem we know of, including early drafts of some, to finally get all of his poetry out there. The 1st edition of his Complete Poetry that is incredibly expensive if you find a copy for sale, won't hold a candle to these.

Thanks for the details Bulbous. It will be important to some of us to know how much added content there is to decide which books to buy. I don’t have the first editions letters so of course I will buy the new ones. I bought the first edition poems to use it with the Wordbook by Barbara. But I will still buy the new edition for completeness sake. As for the fiction books, it will really depend on the content.

Definitely good to know! I picked up a copy of the 1st edition poems for cheap, $55. But that and the letters are the editions I may end up buying in the Ultimate editions.

Mathieu I asked Rusty Burke what changes/additions might be included with reference to Volume 1 of the letters, this was his reply: "The changes are relatively minor, but include some corrections. I asked John Bullard, the editor for the second edition, and here is his reply: Slight updating of the format of the book with the footnotes changed to notes at the end of each letter they go with (instead of at bottom of page) 3 new letters added to volume 1--letter to Weird Tales, a postcard, a fragment of a letter with poems 4 letters that had been mistakenly cut up and wrongly attached to each other, or erroneously made into a new letter, have been corrected Various photos of the correspondents Howard was writing to have been added as well as some photos of Howard appropriate to the letters In the notes for the letters--some corrections have been made; some new notes added Index for the letters updated and added to, and appended to the book to cover the letters in the book Going to be the same general stuff for each volume, with the addition of the drafts to Lovecraft in Vols. 2 and 3 New letters will vary depending on the volume. Also, if they are wanting to do research on a particular letter, the letter's identifying number(s)(TSS#) for the Foundation's Glenn Lord Archives has been provided so they can get a copy of the letter from us if needed
