Palance was a great actor, with a sinister presence without trying he was able to work that into many roles, fan of his work, from Hawk the Slayer, Sudden Fear, Shane, Panic in the Streets to all the bit parts in guest appearances in TV series such as Buck Rogers iin the 25th Century. In City Slickers, he was the good guy, but kind of a self send up role where he had fun with the concept that he was the trail boss scaring the shit out of Billy Crystal and his friends when they go on a cattle drive holiday.
I can easily see Palance worked into various villainous roles in a Conan film or tv series, but playing Conan just don't see it, at least in my opinion. Conan should be scarred and tough as nails, but Palance's look seems more fitting to some eastern Hyborian or Hyrkanian antagonist. From what I understand his parental background was Ukrainian, he had that tall Slavic, gaunt and with high cheekbones look.
I don't know, other's will say that is Conan. I guess we will never know how that would have turned out, but me, nay on that one.

Though REH described Conan as "scarred and sinister." It does not mean that Conan actor should look ugly and evil.
Frank on that subject:

Frank Frazetta on Conan 'FF: Maybe. I don’t really remember, but they gave him credit because Roy was more of a fan than I was and knew the Lancer people, I guess—but I did Conan my way. I went right ahead and created this character that didn’t even resemble Howard’s description at all: mine is quite a different guy. He was what I thought a barbarian should look like, the ultimate barbarian. Howard’s description was quite different. He was leaner with shorter hair and hawkish features. I instead saw a scarred, a real monster sort of a guy. That’s just the way I felt a guy should look like at this point. It’s all personal. My interpretation of the feeling I get from it. Roy might have given me some ideas based on Howard, but he’s all mine. Some of these goofy fans say I look like Conan! That’s nuts! Look at those arms! Look at those scars! Yesh! Yes, he was of Ukrainian origin. His name was Volodymyr Palahniuk. I probably should have clarified that Jack Palance's look was not typical of all Slavic peoples, but was 'one type of Slavic look'. There are other Russian, Ukrainian, Polish background actors that would probably do Conan justice when it came to casting. Maybe Charles Bronson

Maybe Charles Bronson Mr. Buchinsky's problem was he was of the short, stocky side of the Slavic people. My great grandfather was like that, he was around Bronson's height, but would carry railroad ties down from the mountains outside of Kingston/Swoyersville PA to home on his shoulder! We all thought Ireland or so was central to Conan but visually it looks like it was Pennsylvania! Both Jack and Chuck are from the center of the state and Frank of course had the place in the Poconos.

Well my dad’s favorite show when he was living around Wilkes Barre was Cheyenne, I think that’s as close as he gets :-)

Pennsylvania, well, there are legends about Conan making it to the new world

I recently re-watched Maximum Risk (1996), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and couldn't help but visualize his intimidating opponent, played by the Greek fighter Stefanos Miltsakakis (R.I.P.), as a cinematic Conan...
Here's one of his fight scenes with Van Damme...
