I always imagined that a Hyborian Age equivalent of feudal Japan would lie somewhere northeast of Khitai except that it would be semi barbaric and have a partly arctic topography like northern Japan’s Hokkaido island in winter with hot springs and snow apes. I think that concept might have worked although non Howardian.

I also wanted to showcase some of the brilliant art by Gary Kwapisz and Ernie Chan, one of my favourite artist collaborations of the original SSOC era Ah yes! the Itai Daggers!

The primeval Ainu would have dealt harshly with man eating snow apes!

Yeah, forgot to mention that I pictured the Hyborian snow apes as large and ferocious flesh eating carnivores.

The primeval Ainu would have dealt harshly with man eating snow apes! It’s interesting to note that Conan was tracking a Khitan bear, and that many of the Ainu actually had bear cults, and this includes other North Eurasian ethnic religions such as those of the Sami, Nivkh, eastern Slavs and the Finns. The Ainu natives undoubtedly had some influence on Japanese culture. Ainu warriors.

Proncess Mononoke was a Japanese animated fantasy film produced back in 1997 which included Ainu looking characters.

Planet Adventure type of fantasy art and heroic fantasy art, always associated it with the 70's/80's for some reason. Maybe it was cause of all those airbrush murals on the side of vans.

Van murals may be the pinnacle of humanity's artistic achievement.
