Thanks Deuce. Steve also contributed to a great appreciation article over on Black Gate:
I'm currently reading David Gemmell's Ravenheart.

David Gemmell youtube video interview.
“I see myself as the Louis L’amour of fantasy.”
“I loved Howard’s work. I thought the Conan stories were wonderful, gritty and vital; very, very good.”
“And there are fans like Dale Ripkke in the States who’ve produced Drenai timelines which are immensely handy for me. And Dale has just done a map which is going to be in the next book.”
Interesting to hear how he pronounces ‘Druss.’ Makes me wonder once again how REH would have pronounced ‘Conan’ and ‘Cimmerian.’
The questions are in French (which I ran through google translate below) and DG’s answers are in English. Here are a list of the questions and the timestamp at which he answers.
2.24 How did you come to write Legend?
5.12 Writing gave you a new career. What were you doing before?
6.19 Legend - was it a best seller at its release?
7.02 Writing your second novel must have been difficult
8.20 Waylander is your third novel how did you create this novel with an emblematic character?
9.48 Is this when you decide to write a cycle outside the universe of drenai?
11.50 What is your writing method? How do you build your stories?
12.58 So you have emblematic recurring figures for your characters
13.59 Your characters inspired by reality serve to make your fantasy universes more believable
15.51 About cinema did you sell the rights to your books in Hollywood?
17.19 With the following legend did you feel the need to tell more about the character of Druss?
18.44 In white wolf a Drenai novel Druss had to be a secondary character is it really possible
19.21 Your Rigante series takes place in a Celtic world and are you influenced by historical contexts?
21.05 But in the case of drenai your universe seems as complex as that of a historic setting
21.47 What are your relationships with your fans?
22.21 How far do you want to go with the universe of drenai - two hundred novels?

Thanks for post Von K. Very interesting interview. I love what he has to say about selling the rights of his creations to Hollywood. David Gemmell kinda reminded me of REH when talking about the difficulties of writing Historical Fiction. Thanks Von K.

David Gemmell kinda reminded me of REH when talking about the difficulties of writing Historical Fiction. Thanks Von K. Yes, great to hear him speak at long last Hun. Lot's of insights there. I was very pleased to have stumbled across this interview. It was kind of eerily prophetic when he said that he'd write 'till he died since he literally did die at his writing desk working on his last novel.

David Gemmell: “[M]y ambition is for my books to inspire people to do good because I think what this world needs is not more holy men and not more politicians and not more brilliant men, what we need is more heroes because we are becoming increasingly cowardly in the way we deal with life.”

White Knight Black Swan is one of the few Gemmell books I have yet to read. The first edition hardbacks were going for quite a lot and were the only place to read it before the Gollancz reprints came out. Now I am saving that and the Troy trilogy for later they being the last 'new' Gemmell books I will ever have to read. I recommend trying Rhyming Rings as well, if you haven't already. A mystery thriller which draws heavily on his experiences as a reporter.

Quite enjoyable, and containing both a glimpse of Gemmell's life experiences and a magnificent mysterious larger-than-life character I'd love to have read more of. I enjoyed both the mystery/crime thrillers, but White Knight, Black Swan most especially. I look forward to your thoughts.

At your recommendation I'm going to read White Knight, Black Swan sometime soon. Just recently re read Lion of Macedon and am currently half way through a re read of Dark Prince.

Have you read any of the Troy trilogy yet? I'm currently reading it for the second time, as like you, I only have a couple of 'new' Gemmell books to read. And I don't really want them to end 😅. The man is a legend.

The man is a legend. I've not got to the Troy books yet, but I did just finish White Knight Black Swan, recommended by Jason earlier in this thread which I thought was excellent. I reread Lion of Macedon, Dark Prince and Quest for Lost Heroes recently. I'm now reading an REH short story collection, and may go for the Troy trilogy soon, more likely than not. Thanks for the recommendation!

I just finished Legend, which I greatly enjoyed. The ending seemed to be a bit of a deus ex machina, but the story had me hooked from the very start, and I also really liked his writing style. I'm interested in reading more of the Drenai saga, for sure.
