Heh, Bezos wanted his GoT... Now I'm picturing the Council of Elrond in which each guy has a ridiculously attractive prostitute bouncing on his lap while they make their plans...

Now supposedly this is just for the same stuff all over again (namely just LOTR). I can imagine no one wants to reopen the whole Hobbit situation again, so I think that'll be on the back burner. I have to think there's an audience who may not be 100% interested in seeing something they've already seen, just presented different, but would be down with seeing other pieces from that same universe. We'll see what the negotiations bring forth...

I would almost rather see a Hobbit re-do than a LotR re-do. The LotR movies set the bar pretty high in terms of costume and such, but the Hobbit movies fell very short of that. (Too much CGI and silliness, IMO.)
Now, if they could do a Middle-earth saga starting with Silmarillion, speeding through Hobbit, and ending with LotR ... that could be pretty good!

The problem is the whole Hobbit rights situation, does it get reopened with another adaptation?

But I guess the previous contract gave WB the rights to do future adaptations for a certain amount of time...or not. Who knows these days!

It's a go:
Amazon Announces Lord of the Rings series
Before you get excited or upset about seeing it again so soon: "Set in Middle Earth, the series will tell “new storylines,” serving as a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal reportedly includes a potential for spinoff shows."
As for the Tolkien estate: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
Basically: "We're not touching anything Professor Tolkien wrote, we're just doing author-estate approved fan fiction". I hope that's a bit of an overstatement on my part because there are certainly some interesting tales worth going into that we haven't seen. But judging by the way things have been handled in the past...

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Also it's a little disappointing in some respects, in that there are several other excellent fantasy books ripefor similar treatment - Elric, Farfhd and the Mouser, and - cough - Conan...

I'm 100% fine with this...
Something action-oriented like thr Shadow of Mordor video game would be fine with me.
As for rights, etc... i think its actually pretty simple. Bezos (one of the richest guys on the planet) wanted his own GoT, and he gets what he wants.

I saw news to the effect that Christopher Tolkien resigned as director of the Tolkien Estate on August 31. That explains a lot.

Lord knows he's done astonishing things to promote and protect his father's work over half of his life. Time to step back, enjoy his life and let fate take its path.

Christopher Tolkien resigns as head of Tolkien Estate
The site also speculates what may be the basis of the Amazon series (namely the LOTR Appendicies). No, Peter Jackson is not involved, but if they want to "tie-in-but-not-tie-in" to what came before they offer one name: Hugo Weaving. Chances are I think they'll go in their own direction.
