Watched this week's episode.
Finally a pay off! This was actually a great episode. I didn't even notice the absence of my hobbitfu.
I envy the people who haven't started watching this yet, you can binge the slow first five, then settle in for this one.
I'm sure none of the episode fits in with any pre-established lore, etc... but since I'm fairly ignorant to that at this point it doesn't have much of an affect on me. But come ask me again in a year or so once I read the Silmarillion (it's next after I'm done listening to LotR).

Yeah, I enjoyed this episode. I remember reading the Hobbit in school wayback in the 1970s - our teacher read the book, so, I did not really read the Hobbit I read the Lord of the Rings books just after the 1st Jackson movie, unfortunately, I could not get into the Silmarillion.

The name of the episode comes right from Tolkien about the very ideas of what happens in this episode (the fallen elf part though is made up). Podcast probably won't be up until pretty late tomorrow, still have to write it!, Most importantly, they learned a big lesson from Game of Thrones: light your night scenes.

‘Rings of Power’ Debuts at No. 1 on Streaming Chart The 'Lord of the Rings' series outdraws the HBO Max-only tally for 'House of the Dragon' in the United States. The big-budget The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had a big opening weekend on Nielsen’s SVOD charts, outdrawing House of the Dragon among streaming users. It was not, however, the biggest opening ever for Amazon’s Prime Video in terms of total viewing time. The Rings of Power captured 1.25 billion minutes of viewing time following its Sept. 1 premiere in the U.S., the only streaming title to top a billion minutes for the week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, meanwhile, ticked up week-to-week with 781 million minutes on HBO Max (the latter’s total doesn’t include viewing on HBO’s linear channels, which accounts for a significant portion of its overall audience). While the debut for Rings is among Prime Video’s best openings ever — and the first series on the platform to capture the No. 1 overall ranking on the Nielsen chart — it’s not the best. That honor still belongs to Reacher, which had 1.84 billion minutes of viewing time for its opening weekend in early February. One key difference: Reacher’s full, eight-episode season debuted at once, giving Prime Video users about six and a half hours’ worth of show to watch. The Rings of Power premiered with only two episodes, totaling two hours and 12 minutes of running time. That works out to an average of about 9.5 million viewers for the two episodes (dividing viewing minutes by running time) — more than twice that of Reacher‘s opening frame (4.7 million). A closer comparison among Prime Video series is another fantasy show, The Wheel of Time. It premiered with three episodes in November 2021 and amassed 1.16 billion minutes of viewing in its first weekend. Those three episodes had a combined running time of 169 minutes, which equates to an average of about 6.6 million viewers. As for House of the Dragon, its 781 million minutes — encompassing a week’s worth of viewing for the first two episodes and a few hours for episode three — is up marginally from 741 million the previous week. Parent show Game of Thrones remained high on the acquired series rankings as well, with 792 million minutes. Nielsen “reach” figures — a measure of people who watched at least six minutes of a given program — for House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power are somewhat similar. The Rings of Power holds an edge among streaming viewers only, with 12.6 million people in the U.S. checking out the series over its first four days, compared to 10.6 million for House of the Dragon. Adding in viewing of the latter on HBO’s main cable channel, however, brings the total for House of the Dragon to 14.5 million; on-demand viewers and those who watch on HBO’s multiplex channels aren’t counted. HBO says that thus far, House of the Dragon is averaging 29 million cross-platform viewers per episode since its Aug. 21 premiere — ahead of the totals for the first six seasons of Game of Thrones. Nielsen’s streaming ratings cover viewing on TV sets only and don’t include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. The ratings only measure U.S. audiences, not those in other countries, and currently only include Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix and Prime Video. www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/rings-of-power-no-1-streaming-rankings-aug-29-sept-4-1235230284/

I've read a decent amount of the books and generally love Tolkien's work, and I'm quite enjoying RoP so far. It's not perfect, Episode 5 dragged out the Numenor stuff a little too much, for instance, and I feel like there's a distinct lack of Rings of Power in a show with that title, and some of the dialogue isn't that great. But I'm enjoying the world building and the characters so far.

But they are digging in to find some deep stuff. The fact I had to look up Udun shows they did their homework.

Okay, going to put a spoiler here because I think it is... it is regarding the Rings. This Lord Halbard or Halibrand, whatever the fuck his name is, has to be Sauron. Sauron deceived everyone into making Rings, so he could make the One Ring to enslave them. This guy is a damn good blacksmith... His deceiver role, has to be of this Halibrand guise. So he's going to have to maintain his cover for a while here. He's doing pretty good, though, already has himself the kingdom of the Southlands, which became Mordor in a few minutes.

Elendil says it'll take a day's ride east to attack the orcs, yet, when the riders of Numenor attack the orcs the rising sun is behind them in the west, not in front of them in the east . Did they double back or something?

Definitely possible. They may not have the rights to use Annatar so he has to be someone regular. We’ll watch the next couple of episodes for any tells. As for the weird sunrise, if John Wayne could walk into the setting sun on the coast of Vietnam…it’s more dramatic to have it that way :-)

Did they double back or something? Wow, I didn't even think about that, but you're right, hun. Well done, johnny. I think we only have two episodes left. Going to be interesting watching Sauron playing the long con with everyone in this guise.

I don’t know, I doubt it’s reached the lofty goals a half billion dollar price tag will set, but it’s a long way from the abjiect disaster we were afraid of thanks to the awful marketing campaign.

Rings of Power according to the Critical Drinker: The Rings Of Power - A Billion Dollar Nightmare'Corporatised piece of clumsy fan fiction that manages to look obnoxiously over produced and shockingly cheap at the same time... and performed by a diverse cast of activists' Describes so much fantasy ( including the superhero flicks ) produced in the confused west these days. Waste of time and money. I have no idea what they are teaching anyway, some ideology about bending knees to so called 'oppressed' 24/7. What are they fighting against anyway, they depict fighting evil wizards in these productions, but the same Hollywood actors support real life despots when they get the urge to knuckle down on us now and again. Myself, I just can't relate to their bullshit anymore. Amazing the amount of money they are sinking into productions like the The Rings of Power. A billion dollar nightmare indeed.
