Some of the distortions coming from Amazon Studios staff seem somewhat brazen imho:
Amazon's ‘The Rings of Power’ showrunners foolishly think series is “timeless” like Tolkien

God that panel discussion was painful. There are a LOT of red flashing lights in this one that could end up being avoided. We’re not going to know for sure until that first episode drops.
From the descriptions so far, it does look like they’re falling into GoT Season 7-8 mode already. You’ve got five years, you don’t need to cram every significant event over almost 3000 years into just a few. They could’ve done one or two time jumps and people would’ve been just fine.
The main thing they have to remember is Numenor is Atlantis crossed with Sodom & Gomorrah. Get that right FIRST then do the rest.

Yeah, the showrunner says 'go back to the book' but their modus operandi seems to involve diverging from the book on wild wacky tangents as far as possible. One actor mentioned Numenorean nationalists. I bet you that will turn out to be the Numenorean faction deceived by Sauron.
I agree with you about the plot compression. Tolkien wouldn't have been happy with that.

Tolkien wouldn't have been happy with that. I think he and Christopher are probably spinning in their graves seeing whats been done. I mean don't get me wrong I love the movies and video games but they're action games and films. I'm still going to watch the series and give it a chance, but my expectations are insanely low. I hope it's pretty and better than the WoT series was (which I watched and thought it was alright). I don't trust Hollywood to not screw this up given they aren't adapting an actual narrative like with the Hobbit (this is making that trilogy look pretty damn good at this point) and the peerless original LotR trilogy. There is always trouble when people "expand" in the direction they want to, rather than what the author would do. But like I said in the TV thread, once you license your work out there for Hollywood, you lose control and (especially lately) the fans usually suffer for it with inferior products. Gone are the days of John Carpenter adapting John W. Campbell's "Who Goes There?" into the Thing, where changes were made, but still respecting the spirit of the source material. Now everyone is a whore to the machine.

Reading one of the multitude of speculations over on CBR and now it's seemingly confirmed the meteor is Sauron's entrance. They phrased one sentence starting with "If they choose to adapt this aspect...", and I'm thinking why wouldn't they? It's the section regarding Annatar and how Sauron's disguise deceives everyone. I know it's one of the things that got the dude in the second video Vok K posted all upset. Then it dawned on, CAN they use Annatar? I just double checked and his name only shows up in the Silmarillion, so that may be off limits. We'll have to see, it's going to be a messy road to travel down one way or the other.

I think it might still be watchable to fans of generic fantasy who don't mind a contemporary slant on the material. But for Tolkien fans who are genned up on the standard PC tropes that tend to get overused these days it may well range from travesty to the unintentionally parodic.

It's definitely a tale a two descriptions: listening to the showrunners gives me hope, listening to the cast makes me despondent.

Thanks Hun.
This would have been fine as a D+D style production but is certainly nowhere near authentic Tolkien imho. The trailer strikes me as more of a contemporary generic post modern fantasy with a very superficial frosting of Tolkien. It's being totally ratioed on the internet by people from every country in the world.
Meanwhile the ever perspicacious Midnight's Edge offers more perspective:
The RINGS OF POWER goes full STAR WARS, while Tolkien gets new corporate owner!

The rights situation with Tolkien is beyond a mess.
Fire TV got an exclusive scene preview where Elrond visits Khazad-dum and Durin IV( who was supposed to be a reincarnation of Durin III which is hard since he’s still alive in the show). Visually it looks stunning, they got their money’s worth on that front. Content-wise the dwarves have become Klingons.
The marketing has been all over the map. Every time they try to veer away from the stressing of wokey diversity and back to…well, Tolkien, someone comes in and steers it right back there. I’m going to let the show speak for itself, but they’ve made it difficult.
In related news, the Valleys of Numenor’s first episode is up on Spotify, should be showing up in Apple and Google (and Amazon) by tomorrow. Going to try to keep up and do an episode a week, will depend on my work schedule during NFL season.

Some interesting observations from Knight's Watch about the song lyrics in the RoP trailer: (Very short 1 minute vid) SECRET MESSAGES in RINGS OF POWER Trailer Is this a tv show or a psy-op?

Is this a tv show or a psy-op? The "speak your truth" line for those (if any) that don't know is directly lifted out of woke, bullying politics. Corporate actually has included this in some of their messaging where I work (big city healthcare organization). Basically, it encourages people to express their opinions about culture, society and personal plight without hesitation, even if the opinion is ridiculous, statistically incorrect, nonsensical etc. White conservative are excluded from this however because it would typically go against the woke agenda/narrative and the left mob doesn't want that voice allowed. "I'm a woman," said the biological man. = speaking your truth "Black on Asian crime is because of white people." = speaking your truth "Biological men can never be a woman." = you get fired.

I already learnt a lot about LOTR I didn't know, and from just one episode.
