‘World's Oldest Cave Art Found—And Neanderthals Made It’ news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/02/neanderthals-cave-art-humans-evolution-science/‘In a cave in Spain, scientists found this ladder shape made of red horizontal and vertical lines. The artwork dates to more than 64,000 years ago, suggesting it was created by Neanderthals.’ My personal opinion is that I do not really know what to think of these findings. I have always assumed, based on previous work, that cave art only arrived in Europe with later 'Cro Magnon' types, but I suppose neanderthals might have a had a greater capacity for design than initially thought. Perhaps I am too influenced by the classical image of the neanderthal as a club wielding brutish ape man. Well, it is a fun image and I don't think there are any neanderthals around to complain about my 'racist' imaginings about them.

Very interesting article Char-Vell. The evidence points to an upsurge in violence across Europe roughly 2000 years ago, although the reasons for the clashes are not clearly known, although migration is cited. The fighting seemed to be between related northern European groups, with many villages involved. It was certainly a bloody time. ‘The dead appear to have been left on the battlefield for as long as one year before being collected and carried to the bog at Alken Enge. During this time the bodies would have been eaten by animals and decomposed until only skeletons remained. "These people met an incredibly violent end by battle, and were just left there for a long time. I think that's interesting," says Juul, and suggests that the war was so devastating that they were simply unable to deal with the dead afterwards. It appears that Alken Enge was sparsely populated after the event, which would support this suggestion. What was once farmland turned to forest after the battle. But there could be another explanation: A final snub from a vanquished foe. "It's about the worst thing you could imagine: To not be buried or handled correctly after death and so to be denied access to the afterlife. The ultimate debasement," says Juul.’ You can almost say that these were the quintessential ‘barbarians’ of Europe, and the location of Denmark would have roughly corresponded to REH’s Border Kingdom, extending a little into Cimmerian territory.

'First Irishman was black with blue eyes says genetic expert' 'While the ill-informed may claim that you must be pale, pasty and white to be Irish, DNA evidence from the very first Brit, “Cheddar Man,” indicates that there is a strong possibility that the earliest Irish people may have had a much darker skin tone than previously believed.' ''Working on the remains of two men who inhabited Ireland some 6,000 years ago, Irish researchers found results very similar to the DNA analysis carried out on “Cheddar Man,” linking them to mainland European countries such as Spain, Hungary and Luxembourg. These people would have lived in western Europe after the last Ice Age but before the farming era.' In groundbreaking new research, Britain’s Natural History Museum and University College London this week announced a transformation in the way that we look at the “First Brit,” known as “Cheddar Man” and named after the part of Britain where his body was first discovered in a cave in 1903. Cheddar Man lived around 10,000 years ago and has previously been shown to look similar to a white person from modern Britain. That was before this pioneering examination of his DNA and subsequent facial reconstruction revealed that the man had “dark to black” skin, blue eyes, and dark, curly hair. Reconstruction prior to this one had not been based on DNA evidence.' www.irishcentral.com/news/cheddar-man-dark-skin-first-irish-look-likeI put this up as a story of interest, but on a personal level I don't believe that it is conclusive. It was interesting to me because when I read about REH's musings on the Picts he talked about what he considered the 'small dark Mediterranean aborigines of Britain'.

Cheddar man looks like a Howardian Pict for sure. I want to start a cheese company whith cheddar man as a spokesman. So the first people to inhabit Britain and Ireland might have looked like this famous Welshman.
