THE MIGHTY BARBARIANS Issue 1, story by Michael Moreci, art by Giuseppe Cafaro • MSRP: $3.99 • On sale April 19th
They’re barbarians. They loot, they plunder, they conquer. That’s what they do, and they do it alone…until NOW!
When an unstoppable force starts consuming one world after another, sorceress Morgan Le Fey uses her magic to assemble a team of skullcracking warriors who must somehow work together to save all of existence. There’s the young trickster Anansi, Viking shield maiden Birka, the shape shifting Nanook, and their leader, heir to a fallen kingdom and mightiest of warriors, Kull.
Though their alliance is uneasy, they will do whatever it takes to cut the heart right out of their mutual enemy, leaving a path of ruin through everything and everyone that stands in their way!
Not sure how I feel about this.

Ablaze's Belit and Valeria comic had shitty writing on it, but everything else was good. I don't trust the editorial staff at Ablaze to create original material. They should have denied the writer that pitch from the get-go, as they should have denied this guy. This is basically a time displaced (I guess) Kull leading a team of intercultural barbarians to include an African, a Viking, and a Aztec or Native American. Here's the link to the solicits for the series: bleedingcool.com/comics/michael-morecis-mighty-barbarians-in-ablaze-april-2023-solicits/The writer seems to be more literary than the random musician who wrote the Belit and Valeria comic: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_MoreciBut this shouldn't have made it past the pitch phase. If you're going to do a Kull comic, do it right.

After Belit & Valeria they should not be allowed to use REH's Kull or even reprint the Conan Glenat adaptations.
Titan would do a much better job reprinting and collecting the Conan Glenat comics, like they've already done with the Elric stuff.

I'll keep an eye on it. As it will be a different team this time, I don't think it will be similar to Belit/Valeria. And I'm sure they got the feedback the last time.

Fredrik Malmberg needs to sort this out and make sure Ablaze can no longer continue with their crap pastiche comics based on the characters by REH.
...and make sure Titan obtain the rights to the Glenat adaptations.

I queried it with Fredrik in regards to Kull being trademarked and he came back to me with " Yes. To be continued, as they say." Cryptic but it sounds like they might be looking into it.

To paraphrase Richard Jordan: "Fredrik, you let ANOTHER unauthorized Howard comic get out?"

Unlike Conan none of the Kull stories are in the public domain in the US. They would have been better off using Conan, there are around a half dozen Conan yarns in the public domain to pull from innthe US. Trademarks are not meant to extend copyright.

I don't _think_the question is whether the stories are in the Public Domain but that Heroic have Kull trademarked which presumably covers his name and likeness

Not a lawyer, and I'm not giving legal advice, just going by the Duke University site I linked to in the copyright thread: swordsofreh.proboards.com/post/48693/threadBut either way, none of the Kull stories are public domain in the US yet, so it doesn't matter either way. The stories are still under copyright. Ablaze might challenge the status of the works or may just say it's a different Kull.

Certainly a can of worms , and it always seems to have been as far as Howard's work is concerned , be interesting to see what comes of Heroic's stance over it.

Oh I'd like to see them try THAT one: Yeah, he's from a long time ago, is a king and has a tiger as a symbol but that doesn't mean he's THAT Kull... If they want to wait until next summer, then they'll have the two from 1929 to work with. Or try Kane, Red Shadows falls out in June.
